I went off-roading a week ago. I kicked up some water and mud here and there but nothing serious at all. The engine area got a little water area on it a couple of times as I recall steam coming out the sides. When it got wet I heard a squeal for a few seconds presumably from the water.
Anyway, it was fine the rest of the day but the next day when I started it up through today the power steering squeals like a madman for a few mins when the engine is cold. I haven't washed the truck or the engine area since I went 4 wheeling but like I said, didn't get the truck all that dirty either.
Would an engine wash possibly cure the problem or am I in need of a new belt? Or could it be the P/S pump? I'm only hearing the squeal from the power steering.
I'm guessing I should try washing the engine first and if that doesn't work change the belt but perhaps someone has some other advice.
This problem didn't start til after you went mudding, so that leads me to think it's just something on the pulley or belt causing it to slip. Try wiping down the belt and pulleys that the belt drives (that'd be all of them if you're running a serpentine belt setup) with a wet rag, and see if that helps. Also check to be sure your belt tension is set properly, if it's too loose then this little bit of gunk on the belt or pulley could be just enough to cause it to slip.
Have you thought about merely tightening the belt (assuming it's not cracked & frayed)?
yes, that did cross my mind. compared to the other 3 belts it has the least amount of tension. however, 2 of these were recently replaced. i gave it a quick looksee and it seems like the tensioner for that belt would be the power steering pump itself and it should move away from the engine to tighten. looks like there's may be 2 bolts to do this?
one thing i really hate about these older trucks are all the belts. serpentine belts are king!!!
probably not related but full disclosure here. when i changed my steering box a couple months ago part of the installation required turning the engine over, without starting it to prime it. i did this and when i came back from turning the engine i noticed 2 belts had broken off. one was the one that goes around the alternator and a/c and the other was.... can't recall at the moment. i do know that it was NOT the belt that's making noise now.
