I have an '87 Ford F-150, SWB w/ dual tanks, the problem is that neither of the gas guage doesn't work for either tank. The guage will work some of the time for the front tank (bounces around a lot), but not at all for the rear tank, just stays below E. Is it possible to replace something in the tanks and still use the same guage? Are there after market gauges? Any suggestions?
I hope this hasn't been covered too much before, I tried to search it but couldn't find anything?
It sounds like the sending units on your pumps are going bad. And unless someone knows otherwise, you can only buy the sending units with the fuel pump itself, about $100 depending on where you get it from.
If you can get the sending units separate, I'd love to know where from, cuz mine are also going bad.
Do you think it could be in the switch? I figured it was something else becuase it still switched from tank to tank just fine. Are the senders on the pumps?
The senders are attached to the pumps, but the switch is a DPDT so it switches power to the pumps on one set of contacts & it switches the senders to the gauge on another set. It's possible for only one set can go bad, but rare.
Is there anyway to test the switch with out replacing it, maybe by checking continuity or something?? I am assuming a switch would be quite a bit cheaper than two new pumps with new senders.
yes your sending units are bad and i have seen where both go bad at the same time. when you buy a fuel pump the sending unit DOES NOT come with it. you can not buy the sending unit aftermarket the only place you can get it is at a ford dealer. the sending units are only about$28 unless you know someone that works there and can get there discount then its abot $18. i just had to replace my sending unit and my pump so i know you can get them. and the fuel pump was $130 not $100. that was at autozone napa wanted $160. i hope this helps
OK, now I am confused. If there is nothing wrong with the pumps can I just buy the sending units from Ford? I thought they came together, obviously I haven't yanked the pump out yet but I was under the impression they were basically one unit? The fuel is flowing just fine, but the guages are not.
It's too soon to even think about what to buy or how much to pay - the first step is to figure out exactly what's causing the problem. Yes, you can test continuity thru the switch - all you need is a multimeter or a test light and a wiring diagram, which you can find in the back of the Haynes manual.
I have a 92 f350 with dual tanks. It was reading fine, and one time I turned it on, and the gas gauge said empty in one tank that should have had about half a tank. Does the same advice apply to my truck, with checking the sending units, and switch? Thanks, Kyle
The sending unit -- or the float. Check resistance across sending unit before and after a fill-up. If there's no change (and no wiring fault) you'll have to pull the pump. I did it on one of mine and found that the float was cracked. I simply punched a hole at each end of the crack with a sewing needle, soldered it up, and reinstalled it.
