There is no lock on the tailgate. The key only activates the window motor circuit. If you are replaceing the key assembly, it replaeces like any door lock assembly. There is a slide on retainer inside the tailgate that holds the keyway/tumbler assy. in place. Slide that retainer off the back of the assembly and push it out from the inside. If your son's Bronco has the brushed aluminum trim across the middle of the gate, you will need to remove four acorn nuts and four regular nuts from the studs holding it on the tailgate. The hole in the trim is too small to allow the keyway assy. to pass through it.
You have to reach inside the tailgate and relase the safety mechanism. Beware, if you extend the window with the tailgate down, it can break. Make sure to support it.
You can bypass the latch interlock to get the window up by manually closing the latches for the striker posts at either end of the gate. Just make certain that you pull the interior handle up and release the latches BEFORE you try to reclose the gate and mangle the living snot out of the latches. (Who me? The voice of experience? Well maybe just a little).
You may only need to close the driver's side latch, I can't recall.

Just out of curiosity, how much does a new switch run. I have no key for mine, but also have no clue if it even works. The switch on the dash works fine. Just trying to decide whether I should call a locksmith, or order the new part.
Just picked up the part from dealer today, $26 is what it cost me. If your window works from the das it should work fromt the switch. I will let you know when I get it in.

The key only operates a lock cylinder - the switch is separate, but clipped to the back of the lock cylinder. If you're missing the key, you only need a locksmith to make an impression key for you, which should be $8-15.
Since you all are on the subject, my key doesn't work. Well what I mean is that when I insert the key and turn either direction it does nothing, not even a sound. I took off the inside panel and all I could see was that a wire that looks to be the right one is looped and plugged back into itself. I just bought it and I was lied to about everything in reference to condition of vehicle(like it has been jumped a lot and that it possible has a cracked frame) So I just don't know why it would have been disconneted.
