I have been looking to get a truck to tow my Jeep with and do general house work with. I was looking to get a PSD but a dealer I do a lot of business with has a 2003 F-350 with the V-10. It has 70k on it and they want $15,000 for it. I'm not worried about the price but am curious about the engine. What kind of mileage can I expect from it, reliability wise. Also what about gas mileage? I really don't think I need a diesel, although it would be cool. I just plan to tow my Jeep a few times a year, and a small boat. Thanks in advance!
i have a 05 v10 . mpg is not great but she pulls great and i also tow a jeep and a boat. mine works great. iwould like to have disel but cant bring my self to get one wont put enough miles on it.
Drive it, make sure you like it. You can modify a diesel and add 100+hp easily with just a tuner and an exhaust but a gasoline engine doesn't modify very easily if you need more power.
The truck will do everything that you want to do and than some. See if anything has been repaired on the truck, check and see if it has spit a plug or not. If you purchase the truck 1st thing is change the plugs and make sure that they are at the proper torque spec(or have the dealer do it as part of the deal). Everything else is like any other vehicle of that age group to check. Pulling power heck one of many members(rvpuller) on this board use that engine to pull their rv fulltime.
For what you're looking to do, I would also opt for the V10. Very reliable and good power.
Mine had 100k on it with no issues at all. Like they said, don't expect more than 11mpg or so.
Also the dealer put load range "D" tires on it. BFG mud terrains. Will they be ok towing or should I ask them to put "E" on it?
that depends on how much you are towing... check the load rating of the BFG's vs what you require. I use D's because they make the truck ride better unloaded... but i also don't tow heavy.
EDIT: OH and i just hand calculated my MPG's and got 10.6 mixed highway and around town.
