Is it safe to put a timer for the extension cord for the the block heater. I plan on setting it for two hours before I normally drive the truck. I have three other vechicles to drive so I don't drive it everyday.
Thats what I do. It kicks on at 5 and shutsoff at 8 (just incase I sleep in a little). Never had a problem with it.
Plus the $ you save in the first year alone usually pays for the timer and puts some back in your wallet.
How cold does it get in VA. ? I bet by just switching to synthetic oil, Rotella 5w40, you would not have to plug in at all.. (saving the electric bill)
I found a heavy duty 24 hour dial type Intermatic brand timer at Home Depot. It was rated for 1500 watts. Right now being it's the holidays, you may find a good supply of them.
Well I got my brother one for his F250 6.0, and I got myself one too. I will need to check the max watts on them. I got them from home depot for about 20 bucks each. I didn't think I needed the big ones that come in a big box, but I will double check
I have been using a timer for years. I have also found out that sometimes, if you turn the defroster on before you shut the truck off, sometimes a little heat makes its way up through the defroster vents and will make cleaning the windshield a little easier. Does not work all the time though. I usually plug it in if it's going to drop below 25 just because I like it to warm up faster, and it does start easier that;s for sure. I have started my trucks at 0 without any heater, but I prefer to not do that when possible.
Last year in West Virginia the temp was zero, and it did not want to turn over for anything. Had to run a extension cord from the hotel out the the truck for about four hours.
