i have a 92 f150 5.0 auto with a 95 f150 5.0 motor in it. the truck has always had an idling issue but i've grown too tired of it. when i first start the truck it will run fine for about 20 seconds then will simply die unless i give it throttle. then if i start it again it will not stay running unless i give it more throttle. also when i first start it and i go into reverse, drive, etc it will die unless i give it throttle too. im thinking it needs a new idle control valve and a good throttle boddy cleaning. it has the 92 wiring harness so im leaning towards purchasing the control valve for a 92 not a 95 help please thanks
Sounds like your IAC valve is a pretty good guess.
If the IAC valve is stuck or dead it won't get any air. Try pulling the vac line out of the brake booster giving it a little air, see if it idles fairly decent doing so.
You can try cleaning the IAC first, take it off and look at it, see if the valve is gummed up and stuck. If it is a good flushing with carb cleaner should correct the problem.
Do not use carb cleaner on the throttle body though, if you clean it use throttle body cleaner.
