Regeneration. How often?
Regeneration. How often?
Had the truck almost a month now and have put 3300 miles on it. Its been through regeneration 13 times almost once per tank. Some feedback would be great on how often everyone else's is going through regeneration. Thanks.
You have to see the clean exh filter screen pop up on the DIC screen.Or I can tell by the tone of the eng and the mileage drop on the instant MPG

I'm in the camp "it's normal", but admire you for being able to keep track of it.
Since there is nothing that I can do about it - I don't get wrapped around the axle about the frequency of regens.

Keeping track of it its just being smart....Its a new motor new design, it pays to keep an eye on it. I took it for its first true road trip not pulling this weekend and I only saw regen once in about 600 miles so on mine it looks like towing really affects how often it cycles. Thanks for all of your input.

Sorry if my response was insensitive. I should have elaborated. I have 17600 miles on my truck. I have not managed to catch 15 regeneration messages when the screen flashes. As an early purchaser, I too, was concerned with all the new fangled items on the truck. My experiences have shown that is very hard to tell if the truck is in regen if you do not see the message. Yes, if you are an instant mpg watcher you will see a 2 mpg drop in mpg for 10 minutes. I do not hear or feel a difference in the way the truck runs. That is why I said "nothing to worry about".

Ive noticed its harder to pickup on the regen without seeing the message if your not pulling . I'd say I'm pulling about 75% of my miles so far. If I'm cruising and getting 16ish while pulling and it goes through regen the instant mpg will not go over 10. Thats why I was checking into this. My dad has an 08 F-350 and it eats the fuel in regen he also pulls about 99% of his miles, although they have re-designed the whole system for the 6.7's I thought that it wasn't supposed to hurt the fuel economy by using the urea like it did with the 6.4's. I also still haven't got the clear picture on if the DPF is using fuel along with the urea or just the urea alone (if it was using the urea alone the whole time then why does it hurt the fuel economy) This was basically a fact finding mission to see what everyone else's was doing.
The DPF system and the DEF system are separate entities. They work together but separately. The DEF does reduce the number of regen cycles because it allows for less aggressive EGR system tuning and the resulting soot generation that aggressive EGR operation causes. The DPF is operational all the time. It filters if the engine is running. The DEF system is monitored by several emissions sensors and only calls for the DEF injection event when certain higher NOX levels are present. Higher EGT"s like those present when towing will accelerate DEF usage. Lower EGT's like those experienced in light duty usage or around town driving use less DEF. Remember the old 6.4 DPF system used all 8 injectors to create the high egt's needed to regen. The new 6.7 only uses 4 injectors. There is a lot more passive regen going on now as well.
