Ok, well some mornings at <45F the truck will have problems starting to the point where I have to crank it 4 seperate times. I cranks fine, so I'm thinking it is not the batteries. I wait for the "WAIT TO START" wave symbol to go out and crank, but sometimes it just won't. Today on the 4th crank it finally did start and there was a bit of white smoke for about a second or two. This only happens occasionally. Temperature doesn't really seem to be a factor because sometimes it will fire right up in colder temperatures than those I am having a problem with. I am just running regular Rotella T 15W40, but that shouldn't be a problem until the teens. What is the problem?
Sounds like you need a new glow plug relay. If you want to do it on the cheap, pick up a GPR-109 solenoid from NAPA. ~$20, about $40 less than the one they will sell you if you tell them what truck you have. Same solenoid, just mounted different.
The only thing about the GPR-109 is that the terminals are 90 degrees off, but the wires that connect to the original one are long enough to make the turn.
This is what I did, and haven't had a problem. White smoke at cold startup (raw fuel) usually indicates that the combustion chamber is not getting hot enough to ignite the fuel.
p.s. It's kinda fun to go in an request the NAPA part number. The clerk will probably give you a weird look and ask you how you knew that number. I took the opportunity to plug FTE to him and the old guys sitting around.
Okay, I found the part on the Napa website. It is about $30, whereas the "correct" one "GPR110" is about $70. It does indicate that the GPR110 is "with Federal Emissions". What does that mean? Where is it located on the truck?
The GPR is located on top of the engine, behind and just left of the plastic 'powerstroke' cover. There are two relays there. The first one (closest to the cover) is the AIH ( Air Intake Heater) relay. It is taller than the GPR. look a little farther toward the firwall and you will see the smaller, but more important, glow plug relay.
The 'with federal emmissions' comment on the napa site only indicates that you do not have a truck sold in California. CA trucks have a different glow plug controller.
For future ref - you can swap the aih relay for the gp relay just to get ya going. I did the aih delete & put the 2 relays in parallel - I haven't put a new gp relay on in a while.
Okay, I changed out the relay with GPR109 today. It was in the 60s by the time I got it changed, so I will have to wait until it gets cold to determine if it made a difference.
