Might be the indicatior is out of adjustment and you actually have 1's but it's not showing on the indicator because it's out of adjustment. This haplpened to me on my 1999 Ranger and the fix was to buy a new 30 dollar indicator eventho the part that was broken was a 2 cent screwblock.

Haynes manual tells how to adjust cable at the MLPS on driver's side of transmission. If that does not cure it I would suggest cleaning four connectors as mentioned in another thread. It only takes one corroded pin for a solenoid not shifting correctly.

the shift lever is kind of wobbly and it does not engage into first, i can't actually feel it go into 1st. its as if something is blocking the shift lever from going all the way over into 1st. just thought that maybe that would be a tad bit more help. i guess it could use that adjustment your talking about. i just want to try everything that is free before i need to buy something. also when it is in drive or reverse or anything the shift lever is really loose i can put the little red arrow indicator over 2nd and still be in drive.

At the base of the column (right above the driver's shins) there are a couple of small bolts that secure the shift linkage down to the trans. These are known to work loose on the late model trucks and Broncos. Tighten them up and you should lose the "wobble" in the shift lever and will probably discover that 1is is still there and usable once everything is tightened up again.

Way down low and on top of the assembly. They are kinda hard to see. Get your head near the pedal. Digital cameras are great to help see.
