I have been trying to figure out a sound my truck has been making for a while now.
The noise it's making sounds like engine ping, I think.
After scratching my head, fixing the timing, having my distributor re-curved, etc.,
I took a guy for a ride to listen and he said the sound was coming from the trans.
He said, more specifically, that it was my throw out bearing.
The noise happens in all gears (less severe in 1st) from 2200 to 2400 rpm when accelerating.
Something else I can hear is a sort of whirling sound when I'm stopped w/ the clutch depressed.
If this ring a bell with anyone, I could use the feedback.
- By the way, I have the Ford 3.03 3 speed. -
Everything you describe would point to the release bearing. However, with the truck stopped and clutch depressed, is the sound the same with the trans in neutral and in gear?
is the sound the same with the trans in neutral and in gear?
Yes, it doesn't matter if it's in gear or or neutral.
Maybe the two sounds aren't related. The clutch depressed sound is new to me though.
Then again, I haven't driven a manual trans w/o a hydraulic clutch for 15 years.
I was thinking about replacing the fluid with 85w-140 to help nurse it along.
I store the truck in the winter, so I'm going to wait 'till then to dig into it.
Is the heavier oil worth considering in the mean time?
The throwout bearing is a stand alone bearing that slides forward to press on the clutch fingers to disengage the clutch so would be unaffected by the transmission fluid.
With the clutch disengaged all shafts in the transmission should stop turning so if the noise is still there I would think changing the lube would make no difference. However it couldn`t hurt.
