1996 Bronco wouldn't crank last night so I tried to jump with no success. All I get is a loud click and nothing. Battery seems to be ok 12.47 volts @40 degrees today. Replaced the starter this morning and it cranked right up. Parked for 3 hours while I did the brakes and all I get is the click. Tried to jump and no dice. Loosened and retightend the starter and it cranked right up. 3 more hours and it wont spin..........What's the deal?
Thanks,
Ken

Check the connections at the solenoid (pass. side inner fender) and the neg. battery cable-to-frame connection. Make sure the solenoid is actually engaging and you aren't dealing with a sol. contact problem. Did you try the ol' "jump the solenoid contacts" trick w/ a screwdriver? I only aske because if it is the solenoid, thats way around it 'til you replace it.
Just thought of this while I ws typing. There is a secondary relay on the starter. My '92 had a single red wire connection to it via a 0.25" spade terminal. The female had gotten the outer plastic shell broken off of it and the spade term. had gotten really covered in road crud. It had the same symptoms as yours Click but nothing. I cleaned the male connector on the starter and replaced the female with an insulanted connector and have had no problems since.
