Oil Leak

2008 f-350. oil around lower bell housing where it connects to tranny. No oil in front or behind and it is not coming down from above. Took it into the dealer and they wiped it down and said they don't know where it is coming from. Underside of truck is immaculate and was dry at last oil change. Any ideas any one? Or am i crazy thinking its a rear main?

is the oil on the bottom of bell housing, I haven't looked at my 08 but on the previous motors there was a weap hole at the back of the valley between the heads. Oil leaking on the top went into the weap hole and emerged at the bell housing. Every time someone discovered it they would think rear main seal. But the dealer would surely know that, But just in case they don't, or they forgot, take a flash light and a clean paper towell and look in the valley and see if there is a puddle toward the firewall. You might have to push the paper towell in and see if it gets soaked. By the time you get that done someone will jump on here and tell us where it's coming from. Hope this helps ot at least cheers you up.

bedplate is what gets my vote for the leak. They would need to put some dye in the oil

bed plate?

OK guys, I can build houses but in the motor I am lost. Son in law is a dealer mechanic and does non major work on my truck. (he has 6.0 diesel). we went over entire top side of motor it is definitely not leaking from above. Yes they put die in it and I have to bring it back next week. Had I not raised a stink they were just gonna let it be. I finally asked "should it leak?" "well its leaking please find it and stop it" I will see. If is the plate thing how to they repair it?

Cab off, they had to pull the motor and fix the leak around the bedplate. That is what I am thinking, could be something else.

Oil leak

I have the same problem. They put dye in the oil but suspect it is the bed plate leaking. I will have them check it when I go in for an oil change this month. I have decided to live with the small leak rather than have the cab removed and engine pulled. I purchased a 7 year extended warranty in case things start to fail down the road. My truck is a 2008 4x4 F450 with 22,000 kms ( approximately 13,200 miles ) and is used only to pull my 2009 Artic Fox 36 ft 5er.

I just noticed a couple oil spots under my truck in the shed today. Truck hasn't been moved in 3 weeks. I rolled under the truck to attempt to diagnos where the leak was coming from. Based on what I am seeing here it appears to be the bed plate. I have an '08 F350 4x4 with 27K miles. I just bought it in November and haven't even put 1000 miles on it.

the bedplate was resealed on mine at 48k, I also had a rear main leaking,
the dealer said I had an early rear main seal they replaced the seal. All was covered, no out of pocket cost. Bottom line 56k no leaks, clean underside of truck, no oil on the driveway.

Took it to the dealer last week. They cleaned everything off and put dye in the oil. Told me to drive the truck 200-300 miles and bring it back in to see if they can pin-point the leak area. They weren't sure if it was coming from the front cover or the bed plate. I assume this will be covered as truck should have a 5yr/100K mile warranty on the engine/drivetrain.

Yes it will be covered! Not out of your pocket. Let me know what they find.
Good luck,
Steve

Wow! sorry to hear that! Are there other dealerships you can go to? I had to try three dealers before I found one worth a crap! Also call Ford let them know. I had the new updated rear main seal installed, no leaks now. they resealed the front cover then later the oil pan leak and then the rear main were leaking on mine. 10k since the repairs no leaks!!!! Hang in there!
Later,
Steve

Took mine back in on Thursday....they told me they found a small amount of oil/dye leaking from the cam position sensor on the front cover. Removed the sensor, cleaned, replaced seal and reinstalled. They told me they have seen only a few of these.
