The ICP controls your injectors. When mine was going out it would allow intermentent releaseing of some injectors.I bought a SUPER CHIP 60/80 hp programer with diagnostics.I keep having proplems with surges while i was driving and rough idle.I keep pulling up codes P1280 &P1211.I asked the supplier of my programmer about this,he tried telling me that this was a normal thing with running a programmer. That was bs.So I went to ford and it took ford 2 days to get a P1280 code. They did not know what it ment so they called the Ford hotline and then replaced my ICP.My truck has never ran better in its life.
hOW WOULD I attempt to pull up the codes to see if this is a problem w/ my truck?
I thought you would only show a code if your check engine light was on.
Roderick Fort is probably right. The ICP monitors injection pressure in the H/P rail and if it were sending an incorrect or varying signal to the ECM, you may get the symptoms that you described. Another possibility is a lazy IPR valve which could do the same thing. I'm not sure what Ford's stratigy is for setting a code or turning on the check engine light but it could be that if the problem is intermittant and does not remain long enough, it will set a code without turning on the check engine light.
If you need parts, get them from the International dealer -- they're less expensive.
The ICP is located in the top front of the drivers side cylinder head. The IPR is screwed into the H/P pump which is bolted to the back side of the front cover in the valley.
As a tech I am always leary of the customer that comes in and says relace the----- for me. I always suggest running the proper diagnostics, if I can duplicate the concern. Yes the diag costs $$ but so do the replacement of several of the wrong parts. Just my 2 cents. Let us know what happened.
My dealer was so dependent on there computer to repair my truck they forgot to us common sense to repair my vehicle to make long story short I replaced the Icp an my truck runs great now
Yeah, parts are a PITA if you get them from Ford and have them do the work. Get them from the International dealer next time and do the work yourself.
Has the problem abated?
Rolling down the road the other day at about 45. Heard a slight change in the normal racket that the motor makes, and then the "service engine soon" light came on. Motor didn't feel any different, and the light went out after a minute or too. Happend to be passing my dealer so I stopped in to see if they could scan it for any error codes. They were pretty cool about it and a tech met me out back. P1211 (ICP)code was stored. He ran a bunch of self-diagnostic tests and all seemed well, good pressure in the rails, injectors firing fine and such. Drove 6hr to VT and back over the weekend w/ no problems.
I mention this for two reasons.
1. Service engine soon light doesnt need to stay on to have stored a code.
2.(selfish reason) Should I be worrying about this?
