Hey guys. I got a question for ya and im hoping its not something serious.....Ever since I changed my glow plugs E99 F350 7.3L (pass side only) ive been hearing a hissing type noise going down the highway....now this only happens when I am at about 45-75, 1/4 throttle, and between 1400-1900 RPMs. I have no idea what it could be and im hoping its not hurting my baby. thanks for the help guys. FTE is awsome!
Maybe check the boots to make sure one didn't tear or may have not seated properly? It could be hissing at lower boost, but at higher boost it opens up and the sound changes to where you do not hear it as much.
It could be possible its your EBPV is shutting closed to allow your engine to heat up, its cold here so I know you guys are freezing as well. I never noticed it while driving back some time but when you leave off the pedal the hissing continues to warm the engine.
Ok so I tightend up the boots and it is still happening....I had my buddy listen to it today....he said one of the trucks at work did the same thing.....its either a cracked turbo or gasket......does this sound like it could be a possibility??

I noticed the same thing as Mike describes at same parameters you're hearing it. Does it do it once the engine is warm?
yea for the most part......it doesnt really do it when it is cold...butit does the whole time the engine is warm....and i know its probably what the truck is supposed to do but it goes into like a high idle mode while its warming up outside. and you can kinda hear the noise then too.
How long have you had the 6637 in relation to hearing this? How long since it started getting cold? How does the sound change when you let off or step on the accelerator? Deeper, stops suddenly, gets throatier?

Reason: more info
Its been in for about 6 months....ive only started hearing it after i changed my glow plugs...which was before the cold weather really hit....ummm probably.....1 or 2 months ago.....when i step on the accelerator it gets throatier i guess and then goes away completely....if i take my foot off...it goes away....like i said it only happens around 1400-1900 rpm....anything above or below it is non-existant
I edited last post to ask about how sound changes with changes in throttle. How much did you take out to do the GPs? Just the valve covers, or tubes/spider/etc? You're quickly coming to the end of my limited potential to help, but if you throw out some more info smarter more experienced folks may be able to get you further. Obvious things like the boots and clamps come to mind, but you've checked those...
The high idle hiss is the EBPV closing to heat the motor, normal and my truck seems to even do it when in DRIVE if I don't use the accelerator pedal (i.e., coasting long enough the truck thinks it is back in idle and closes the EBPV, weird since it isn't in PARK so I would think the "feature" would be turned off).
I have noticed a lot more hissing since the 6637 and getting colder, engine cold and warm. Learning that so far it is all by design if not specifically mentioned in the owner's manual
I also edited my post.....the only thing i took off when changing my glow plugs was my IC tube and the valve cover....thats it....thanks for all your help...hopefully I can get this figured out...if it is normal i will leave it alone.
If the hiss is due to the GP change, I think you're back to the IC boots/clamps. A turbo leak or other would have been heard regardless of the GP change, unless it is by pure coincidence.
Can you do a leak check? There are a bunch of threads for homemade leak detection builds, a 4" air intake stopper (plastic plug or PVC cap) with a bike tube valve in it- then hook up your air compressor and run it to 15-30 psi depending on the thread. I guess I would start low and work my way slowly up. Be careful taking the stopper out as it may pop out at you. I don't see the CCV mod in your sig, so do it at the turbo intake (after the CCV input) so you don't pressurize the crankcase.
Sorry couldn't be more help, but I think the leak check is your next step.
Good luck, hopefully someone else will read this and steer you right if I'm off or offer more educate suggestions on places to look. Either way, don't forget to post back with the info as to what it is doing and why this is normal (or a very cheap fix!)
Hey fella's and ladies, I know its been a couple months but I figured i should update you all, The problem that i found with my truck through extensive research, It was my EBPV! I have the 4" straight pipe turbo back and thats what all the hissing noise was, I unplugged it and I havent heard it since. Thank you for all of your help. Greatly Appreciated!!
