6.0 diesel motor- Recently I have had a tone change coming out of the exhaust. The truck usually has a hissing turbo sound. Sometimes it changes to a sound of a gas motor then reverts back and forth. I have traced it to the EGR system. I have been running the truck with the EGR electric motor unplugged and the sound is back to normal and the truck runs great. I think the EGR system is dirty and clogged. What method and what parts need to be removed to clean the system. Also what would be used to clean the parts.
Lots of information in the 6.0 diesel forum on this.
The turbo changing tones can be from the EGR but there's also a computer strategy that cycles the turbo vanes to help keep them from sticking due to carbon.
To clean the EGR valve you need a 10mm socket and a lady's foot crowbar OR a length of wire and a long prybar to get it out. You'll also need to pick up some EGR valve o-rings. Use CARB CLEANER (not brake cleaner) to clean the EGR valve with. Clean it in an UPRIGHT position so that the cleaner doesn't get into the weep holes and ruin the electronics of the vave. Replace the o-rings and reinstall.
