6.0 Trans cooler question

My truck with now 259000 on stock trans and trans cooler, i believe its time for preventive maintance..I am looking at the "heavy hitters"IE BTS,John Woods posibally HD from ford and the 6.0 trans cooler...My question is, is the 31 row cooler worth the 100.00 added cost over the 26 row???? will it fit my 03??? I have read enough to know i want the 6.0 cooler but havent seen much discusion between the two...
Thanks in advance

The 26 row will work fine, I sure as heck wouldn't pay $100 more for the 31 row. Actually, I seem to remember someone very knowledgeable (possibly even Mark Kovalsky - the resident trans expert) use facts to show that the 26 row actually cooled better than the 31 row. And yes, they will fit your truck.

I have been searching this exact question- which cooler is better 26 row or 31 row so thanks for thread. The only difference is my tranny is not bad yet, but I have already made a decision to go the $5000 BTS route and I am getting a DP Tuner and 6.0 tranny cooler for Xmas. Piggy bank does not have enough for Brian yet.

I am with you, Trans not out yet..... FYI, I believe that price includes the 6.0 cooler or at least close. personally, i wouldnt put the 6.0 cooler in until the new trans goes in... if anything for now i would consider a low priced aftermarket cooler...Just my way of thinking

I never thought to ask Brian or Tina if it would be cheaper if I already had the 6.0 cooler and I think I remember someone saying that price included him installing a 6.0 cooler. Skijason would know as he recently went to Arkansas, but thanks for the suggestion.

For what its worth, I installed a 26 row cooler on my truck with 233K on the the stock (rebuilt) tranny. Best investment I have made yet. Dropped the tranny temp significally. Even my girlfriend noticed that it felt cooler in the cab and the center hump was cooler to the touch, so I'd say 26 row is the way to go.

The 26 row cooler is the newer and more efficient design of the 2, per Mark Kovalsky.

Brian (BTS) put a 6.0 on for me at No Charge for the Labor. He re-built my first BTS that my installer where I live screwed it up (long story and in one of these thread). (I drove that BTS 250 miles with the center shaft broken in half, pulling a camper, that is one tough trans to hold together that long). I left the truck at his shop at mid day and he said he would be done before noon on the next day ( we stayed at campground 2 miles away). I told the wife that we should have Brian put on a 6.0 cooler and I knew that they would cost 'around' 450.00. I called Brian the next morning, hoping to catch him before he was done. I said that I wanted to buy and have him install a 6.0. He said that he put a 6.0 on the truck 'last night', as he was not going to let 'the truck' leave with a 7.3 cooler on it, even if i did not pay for it.... I said ... no, no... I will pay for it as that is what I wanted. I said that I was 'worried' about the 'temps' of the trans and thought about putting gauges on it. He said that the 6.0 should take away 95 % of the 'worry'. He said, " If you want gauges to 'look at'... thats fine... but you will now never 'need' gauges".

So, Yes the cost is NOT included with the transmission.

What is included is the removal and install and all the 'tuning' that you want untill you are happy by the way it shifts and where it shifts.

BTS also changed out my forward gear box oil for free. "And" I know for a fact that they topped off my radiator and windshield fluid, because both were low before I got there and topped off when I left.

Joey, I wanted the 31 row cooler on my truck when JW put in his trans. After all was done he told me he installed the new cooler 6.0 and I am very happy with the temps. I to would not install the new cooler on the old trans if you are going to change it in the near future. A clean cooler on a new trans is what you want.If it going to be a long while do it but not if its in your near future.

I do not mean to slight any of the JW tranny folks as it is a simple formula for me-200 miles versus 2000 miles.

There are only a few people on these forums who feel "slighted" if you don't make the same decisions they made. 99% of us agree that you can't go wrong with either BTS or JW.
