Ok here is my situation. 94 f350 7.3 idi turbo. 156k miles. I was driving last night and with no warning check engine light over heating my engine just started making a rattling noise vibrating like an engine mount was broke. I popped the hood and the small hose on the back of the air intake filter housing was off and covered in oil. The small hose that I think goes to the turbo. It was dark and I could see real well. I called a repair shop and was told sounds like a bad turbo. My question is the rattling noise is there when you start the truck and leave it at idle. I didn’t think the turbo shaft moved unless you give it fuel? Any ideas so I can make a determination on what to do.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
the hose goes from the cdr to the intake box. it basically sucks out the blowby from your piston rings and sucks it back though the engine. oil is normal, but it is time to service the cdr. the turbo shaft moves the second you fire it up, if it doesnt then its time for a rebuild. easy way to check if its your turbo is to remove your intake filter lid, pull it out from the turbo intake side (make sure the engine ISNT RUNNING) and check for shaft play on the turbo shaft. if it moves up and down, side to side or back and forth more then a 1/64th of an inch then its time for a rebuild. it wouldnt cause engine to raddle and overheat though. you should check your fan clutch for that issue.
i never got hot, i serviced the cdr last oil change. what would make the small hose blow off. can you rebiuld a turbo or do you have to get a new one. the repairman where i might take it to said if it is the turbo that would run about 2k. does that seem right or should i keep looking? thanks
keep looking! Depending on how bad it is, expect 500-900. There's a few sites where you can do an exchange for about 600. They send you a rebuilt one, you send yours back. Heck, there's a guy who sells them outright rebuilt for 1000 on ebay
...the turbo that would run about 2k. does that seem right or should I keep looking? thanks
Maybe with labor, embellished labour at that; 2000$ could buy you an aftermarket performance turbo kit brand new! I'm selling the whole damn kit for less that 1k.
Listen to Oreo tho... don't spend anything on a turbo without looking into that overheating/rattle problem first. The turbo wouldn't lilely be the cause to that, especially overheating.
Imaginably with the CDR hose disconnected you could've sucked some kind of crap into your engine/turbo since its after the filter, but it would be sheer bad luck that it would cause significant damage.
i never over heated, just a loud rattling sound when the engine is running. my son just text me he went by to check on the truck at the truck stop and i had him check the oil. he said there was barley any on the dip stick. but there is oil spray all over the engine compartment. that small hose on the back of the air filter housing that came off was covered in oil last night. the clamp was still tight i tried to push it back on and it wouldnt go on. some force it must of took to blow it off. dont like where this is heading i am affraid.

Reason: type oh
Hate to say it, but it sounds like you may have blown all your oil out cruising down the highway, and grenaded the motor. Did you (or your son) look underneath the body, and see how much oil is coating the underside of the truck, too?
Pulling the drain plug would probably be a good place to start. See how much metal flake & oil comes out of the crankcase
I got the truck towed in to a shop and am waiting for the damage report. he said he will get on it first thing this morning. i will let everyone know what he says. keeping fingers crossed.
ok bad news. i threw a rod, whole in the oil pan. need to rebuild engine, or get a new/reman one. i have a landscape business and i need the truck. any advice on which way to go, I need to be as cheap as possible money is tight this time of year. any links to places for cheap rebuild kits or reman motors. also looking for a used motor.
new isnt an option, reman sure. you can go though ford for like 7k, have a rebuilder build it for you for about 3k or hunt on craigslist for one. you can usually find a complete truck for under 1800 and pull the engine, do a quick swap. that way you can hear it run before you buy.
ya, parts and labor, minus the connecting rod and wrist pin. you will either have to find one or let him buy one. you can get the kit from international. theres a few guys here who have gotten em other places, or you can get your engine rebuilder buy the kit. you dont really want to buy it yourself until he breaks that thing down. if you buy a standard kit, and your crank has to be turned then you gotta buy another set of bearings. he might be able to hone it and reuse your pistons, if you buy a kit, you might buy .030 over and you cant use em. honestly the 7.3l isnt good for rebuilding if you have to bore it out. the cylinder walls are too thin as it is, causing cavitation. your looking at $90 per cylinder to have them sleeve it, then theres a chance the sleeve drops and ruins your whole engine. id go the craigslist rout, look for a 86-87 6.9l would be best
i was looking for a 6.9 and i see there are two a 6.9 and a 6.9LD whats the difference mine 7.3 is a turbo if i find a old engine but its a non turbo will my turbo just bolt on or will it take some modifications to make it work?
