Steering = Hubs
Ok here we go again i have a steering problem on my 2000 X 148,000miles, I put a Redhead gear box on and 3 new pumps after each pump it works good for about 2-3 weeks. Now its wondering for some time and i got tired of replacing stuff but this morning i locked my 4X4 hubs in and it was acting like it was in 4 High but was not so i said screw it and off to work i go. Almost to work it clicked in my head (hey its steering Awesome) so i just left them locked in lol. Any clues on what it could be ??

Wild guess, I would think it may have to do with the needle bearing in the hub that the axle rides in. when the hubs are unlocked the axle stays still and the hub spins around it. when the hubs are locked the Bearing and axle spin at the same speed. If its boogered up (<--technical term) it could act the way you describe. This is a TOTAL Guess so take it for what its worth!

X2 on the needle bearings. I did not have poor handling but the axle was sticking to the bearings causing one axle to partially lock. The axle stub was bouncing around so much the vacuum seal was shot and mud/junk was in the locking hub.
Replaced the stub and needle bearing and cleaned the hub, installed a new seal and all is good now.
Something worth looking at.
