76 f150 4x4 sloppy steering problem

I have a problem w/ my steering. It is old and a little sloppy originally but lately I have have some bigger problems. It will occasionally steer erratically side to side w/ no steering input and it takes 1/4-1/3 steering revolution to correct. I pulled over found no pwr steering fluid on dipstick, refilled and it drove fine for many miles. I decided to replace pwr steering pump and did. Steering seemed erratic and squeely pump, after test drive. I then replaced pwr steering pump old hard return line thinking it might be getting air in system. It test drove fine. Later I went for 20 miles w/ no problem. Made a L/H turn and steering got erratic. Pulled over and found L/H locking hub in between locked and unlocked position and the hub area almost HOT (very warm). I heading out to put on jacks but thought I'd ask for opinions and ideas? It just seems odd to me since its not a constant problem.

Need to check for a bent spindle. This will cause a locking hub to turn.

Maybe a rag joint? I had the like problem with mine. I did not buy a new joint, I bought a rebuild kit at NAPA. It was an easy rebuild.

Replaced rag joint already, sorry should have said that! I had the Rotor off and see nothing at all so far. Will look @ spindle more closely once I take it out.
Any other ideas while she's apart?

sloppy steering

I put in a 2nd steering pump and she is doing good!!!
Wish I would have found a "NEW" pump when I started looking!!!
Hope this one lasts(longer than the 1st one I put in) but its one of them "lifetime" pumps sooo.
I try to steer clear of the "lifetime"s because I dont thing the quality is there. I have had problems before on "lifetime" stuff!
