As some of you know the 94 model has that little filter canister under the FPR. What I'm curious to know is if that strainer in there does the same thing as the screen in the side of the bowl as in a redundant system or is it in a different part of the fuel flow?
I ask because that screen in the side of the bowl is a pain to clean and it often tears up the o ring on the FPR when I remove it. With the canister I can just unscrew it with my fingers and blow it out. Nothing to mess up.
Can I just leave the screen out of the fuel bowl on this one?
But the later models have 2 screens or a different screen.
I really want to compare a newer FPR setup so I can know the exact differences.
I've never found mine to be "dirty" but there is gunk on it when I clean it, just reg diesel filth.
But i've never found anything bad on my other FPR screen either.
The little pain in the neck screen is on the dirty side of the fuel filter so I would think its a good idea to leave it installed. I'm sure there are plenty of folks that have removed them. If my thinking is correct the strainer is on the high pressure side.
I had it all apart this summer to do a good cleaning. There were a bunch of what looked like tiny flakes of paint in the bowl on the side. The little screen was just nasty! But I had just done the injector rings so who knows. I need to go look at the flow on that thing to see if it goes through both the screen and the little filter before hitting the FPR. If it does then that screen is history.
I have a 97 one too and the only real difference I see is no little filter on the side of it. It's just the fpr.

Alright! I'm not the only one thinking I see the little flake thingies!
I thought I was loosing it.
The later FPRs also have another screen like the early builds do, it's just not as obvious as on our early builds. Obviously ours you just unscrew the canister and there is a screen. On the later ones there was a cap w/ a snap ring holding it in(it's in the same place as our canisters are) and behind that there is a little screen.
