i was curious if it was possible to install the 5r110 in our trucks or if it would be worth putting the 5 speed tranny instead of the 4 speed 4r100. not in need of a transmission yet but trying to figure out what im going to do when the situation does occur
A 5R110 would be a very expensive mod, not only is it a complete different hole pattern, but the PCM controls the trans and there are not any (available to the public) ways to control the transmission and the engine from your PCM.
If you are looking for a built trans you could go with a BTS, or John Wood. You could even go as far as putting something like a Gear Vendors OD on the truck and still be cheaper than a 5R110 swap.
Going to a manual with a six speed is probably an easier route.
People have done it. There are adapter plates, and PCS sells a control module that is completely tuneable. But like Ken mentioned, it's expensive, and it's an added cost over and above the transmission alone.
