Ignition switch

Hey guys, my ignition is acting up. I have to crank it all the way to start it. There is nothin, then it will crank slow, then it will crank fast and start. My ignition is super hard to turn when its cold. I took it out, cleaned it and all the connecting points were clean and not worn. Any suggestions?

Yes it is not your ignition switch that is being hard to turn it is the tumbler and the gearing after it, when the grease get hard it wont allow turning very well. you have to dissasemble the steering colume and lube it all up, plus you may have to replace some parts. as for the cranking issue try cleaning you battery terminils ( noot just the outside but remove and clean the mating surfaces), while your at the battery have load tested

Was stranded today. I cleaned all the terminals about a week ago. Now its just not getting a full connection somewhere to crank over. I tried with my battery box too. It usually cranks slow then will go fast and start. Now its just cranking slow. Man how do I dissasemble the column. I dont have a steering wheel puller

Operating the key results in a rod pulling up a switch located at the bottom of the steering column inside. Try to operate this switch by hand. Works ok? Then your problem is further up the steering column, rent a steering wheel puller for free at O'reily's Auto Parts near you.

To gain easy access to the switch rod, I usually remove the pastic collar at the base of the column before it goes under the dash. looking under the column there will be 2 screws reccesed in the plastic, remove these and it split into a top and bottom half, sometimes it will wiggle out, otherwise you might have to remove panels on either side of the column. On top of the exposed column there is a rod, clamp a needle nose vise grip to this and push towards the bottom of column. If your problem is in the column, this will should get you started, if it's the actual electrical switch further down, it won't. The switch is not expensive, and don't require removing the steering wheel.
