my truck seems to never get above the C on the temp guage. i think it maybe the thermostat, but is there a correct way to check for that? i really dont want to tear in to it and find out its not the problem. i get very little heat and its usually after about 20 mins of driving.
also if i need a thermostat...any one have any tricks/tips to not make a huge collant mess?
If your upper heater hose isn't getting warm, it is your t-stat stuck open. If you have a laser temp gun you can check the temp at the neck, it should be around 180* or higher at operating temp ~20 minutes or so.
You are pretty much going to make a mess, you can drain the radiator, but there will still be some that comes out of the neck, when you remove it. A small kiddie pool makes a good catch basin, but this time of the year it may be a tough find.
Plan on getting a new upper neck as the stamped steel ones tend to be hard to get sealed and are often rusty, when you remove them. IIRC the neck is only around $17 and the T-Stat is something like $34 from the good dealers like Parts Guy Ed.
try hitting it with an infra red thermometer and see what you get for a temp. Drain radiator before getting into the t-stat. Replact t-stat housing with billet one.
thanks for the quick replies...ill take it for a ride and check with my heat laser...when i squeeze the top hose, the degas bottle fluid rises...dont know if thats an answer either

No, that doesn't tell the story, but if you can grab that hose and hang on to it after you have been driving, you probably need a t-stat. That hose should be pretty warm after driving. If your T-stat is stuck open, the engine will not get up to operating temp.
i drove for about 20 mins...let idle about a total of 10 mins and the top hose was cold...when to drain some coolant from the petcock for a SCA test and the coolant was ice cold...about 25 degrees here today
