What is the sensor that is mounted on the cover that goes over the front of the HPOP reservoir where you take the bolt out for the timing gear? I broke the line and need to fix it but was wondering what the sensor was? Any help would be appreciated.
There's two on the front that I know of... one has only a wire and the other has a tube that goes from the passenger's side exhaust header to the sensor. The former is your Camshaft Position Sensor and the latter is your Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor...
Thanks for the reply. The one with the tube is it. Is the sensor needed or can I pug it off? I have a feeling it is going to be hard to change out. I could be wrong though. I think the tube was a little rotten and it snapped.
It's normal... eventually, those tubes get plugged with soot and rot out, cracking like yours did. Sometimes, the sensor itself will get stuck reading X amount of pressure... you need a scan tool to read that. My tube was plugged and cracked, but it didn't break... my sensor was fine, though (I have AutoEnginuity). A tube is pretty easy to change out... just take your time and use plenty of PB-Blaster. Don't round off the nuts either... use a good wrench. Once loose, it should be pretty straightforward...
Jon is right, once you get that tube loose its easy. You can access the lower part from the wheel well. Soak it with some PB and use a flare nut wrench if you can.

Man, I wish I had a set of flare nut wrenches... I'll never find that danged money tree!
Actually, to be honest, I wouldn't get the back pressure tube used... most will be plugged and in the same shape or worse than yours. You might want to pick up a few sensors though so that when/if you get the sensor checked with a scan tool, you'll have some extras to try... but the tube is probably one of those things that should be bought new. Clay (Riffraff Diesel), Ed (partsguyed), or Bob/guzzle (Diesel O-Rings) might have the tube... check 'em out!
