Hello, I have a 2001 4 cyl ranger with over 100,000 miles on it. What can I do to give it some power. I know nothing about chips and cool air intake or engine swaps. Basically I am just wondering what can be done, I am clueless. At that point I can learn the procedures themselves. Thank you,
In this forum the response you're going to get is to put a V8 in it. As to wasting your time on a old 4 cylinder, you'll have to go to the ranger forum for that.
what 8 can I put in it. I am having a hard time googleing it

What 8 can I stick in it with the littlest problems?
You'll run into problems any time you change from stock engine to a different one... trust me, I am living it right now. But as for what 8 you can drop in with the least "trouble," It's gonna be a 302. The reason I say this is just because it's a fairly common swap to do, so there's tons of info, and lots of parts to make it happen. You can pick up the kit to swap (which includes motor mounts, and a few other goodies), fairly inexpensively. But by no means, is it just gonna be a bolt in and go conversion. I recommend researching it till your eyes get tired, before choosing to go that route.
I agree that the 5.0/302 is the easiest swap but depending on the emissions where you live, the 4.6 V8 might be your next reasonable choice. Around here you can find wrecked police cars with really low miles for next to nothing. I know a guy who bought one for something like $1000-1500 and it only had 13000 miles on it. He's putting the whole drivetrain in a 65 F100.
Besides the 5.0 swap another that may be a bit less involved is a 2.3 turbo swap, you really need to swap the whole motor not just add the turbo parts to yours, but considering the motors are externally very similar there aren't a lot of other parts that need to be changed to make it work. Again do a search for this on the web as it has been covered numerous times in detail.
Check out the ranger station for the 5.0 swap , the 2.3 turbo might be the way to go , with a garret T3/4 turbo , headers , head work & cam , you can get 275 HP to the rear wheels.....Lew
