of my classes the other day when I was bored. But if someone really wanted to go through the trouble of running offroad diesel (and when fuel goes up like it did around the Katrina days, it may just be worth it), this would probably be your best solution (somebody may have already thought about it before, but as far as I go, it’s an original idea to me). I thought of 2 ways of being able to do it:


1) Pull your filler hose loose from the tank, extend it down a ways so that if you ever get dipped, it actually seems like they're going down into your tank, and then cap it off but with a way to undo it every once in a while. Once you cap it, fill it with a gallon or so of regular diesel. The reason I say to be able to make it so that you can undo it every once in a while is because you'll probably want to drain it and put new diesel in it about every 2 months or so. But then once you've done that, you can come up with a way to add another filler neck somewhere else "hidden" on the truck that is connected to the fuel tank and that is where you can pump offroad in. This is where I got hung up thought because I could not come up with a place that would that I just loved the idea of putting a filler neck there. The best place I could come up with is either right where the bed flattens out right above the fuel tank closest to the cab. I would probably try and rig it up just like the fuel door is now. I would probably line-x the fuel door so that it would blend into the bed pretty well. So this is probably the route I would go.


2) This is probably the easier solution in terms of how to be able to connect your new filler nozzle to the fuel tank. But what you could do is get an auxiliary fuel tank in your bed, for example the UWS transfer tanks that go in the bed of the truck. You could then drill a hole in the bottom of the tank and match it up with a hole in the bed of the truck, and run a tube from that tank to your fuel tank under the truck. This would probably not be the route I would go simply because I have a regular tool box and don't want to eat up my bed space with a fuel tank. However, it would definitely have it's advantages. You could increase your fuel capacity tremendously! If you got the 75 gallon tank, your truck would then be holding at least 105 gallons if not more. You could drive on that for about 2,000 miles. Also, your way of scheming offroad would be more undetectable, because no one would think anything about putting offroad diesel in one of those because that's what they're made for.



So anyways, just a thought. If I get extra bored one day and am feeling a little creative, I might try it out. But I would definitely love to see someone try it.

You need to be able to switch back to road fuel, some state troopers / DOT have sniffer devices to check tailpipe output. I know several people who have it rigged so they can run farm fuel from aux tank in the bed and switch back to factory tank. Saves lot's of cash that way

I've been told that the offroad they put out around here (upstate SC) is no different from road diesel, it just hasn't had the taxes paid on it and that's why you can't run it, but that the contents of the fuel are exactly the same (with the exception of the dye).

Answers.com - What is the difference between off-road diesel and highway diesel

Looks like you are right I thought there was a difference in content detectable through emissions.

Yeah, from what I've heard they make it the same, however they don't have the sulfer standards that highway diesel does. Although they generally meet the 15ppm standard for highway diesel, they don't necessarily "have to".

There's a guy in my neck of the woods that dead-ended his fill tube and poured some road diesel into it. So if the DOT guys stick him, it shows road fuel.

Then he connected the tank to another tank in the bed of his truck that's under his tool box and out of site. I think he has a hole in his tool box to fill the auxillary tank. The bed tank gravity feeds the one under his truck, and he runs that way on red.

He gets farm fuel for free, so its a significant savings to him.

I have to pay for my fuel, so the risk/reward isn't justified.

Yeah that's my thought about the whole situation too. Round here there's only about a $0.30 difference. But I remember after Katrina when diesel was over $5/gal, offroad was just under $4/gal, and way cheaper than even regular gas. That would probably be worth it.

Has anyone outside of big-rigs every been stopped for this? I never have.

around here if you have farm plates you can run purple gas or diesel no problem.

I thought the "red" also turned your tailpipe red too..... dead giveaway!

Here in Wa. state the fine is quite hefty. They automaticly assume it's the only type of fuel you have used. A local contractor was fined over a million bucks for his use of offroad fuel in on-road vehicles. Needless to say he is out of business now. A farmer here was fined $10,000 for the use of offroad fuel in his harrowbed hay hauler, driving from one field to the next. Seems a little to risky in our liberal state.

Here in SC, the state transport police (DOT) rarely, if at all, ever come into town. They sit at weigh stations and I rarely hit the interstate. Plus, most people get caught from a tank dip, and the whole point of this thread is how to avoid that.

Not mincing words here are you Steve.I don't trust the dyed fuel in these parts this time of year,not enough fuel coming out of the tanks to be sure it is half fresh.In the summer I would consider it but with my luck I'd get dipped.
