A month or two ago I replaced my power steering pump and now from time to time at low speed in a parking lot it seems to loose the power steering for a inch or two distance on the steering wheel. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this? I have a 1997 f 150 4.6 4wd. Thanks for any suggestions.
My power steering is out and I need to replace the pump. I've never had to do anything to my truck, short of a tune-up .. new plugs and wires. Looking under the hood, the power steering is completely hidden, so with 8 inches of snow on the ground, I'm not looking forward to changing it out.
Any comments, suggestions you may have, would be appreciated.
As for your issue with the new pump, now ya got my curiosity/ paranoia way up there. I'm a poor broke slob and cannot afford to change pumps numerous times. I wanna do it right, the first time.
It was all that hard except you have to rent the tool to take the pulley off and put the pulley back on. Taking the fan off was a pain. Somebody on this site suggested using a very large Crescent wrench to hold the nuts on the pulley and it worked just fine. I don't now why I am having the problem I am having. The pump was only 35.00 dollars.
Loan the fan tools out from a local parts store.
Be sure to purge the system of air by turning the wheel from stop to stop several times while filling the reservoir.
What is your suggestion for purging the air once I have already filled it up? I thought it might be air in the system but wasn't sure how i could have avoided it. Thanks for any help.
I doubt it is an air problem. IF its an air problem u will notice it the most when turning hard and the wheel will vibrate and do all sorts of stuff. The best way to purge the system is fill it up. Start the truck cut the wheel all the way to the right or left, take the reservoir cap off and wait until all the air bubbles are gone. Sometimes u may need to do some parking lot maneuvers to remove the rest of the air. If u left the system open for a day or two u have a totally different situation. U will probably need a vacuum pump. Thats the way i do it. Just rig u up a way to sick all the air out. I can elaborate if needed.
Back to the no power problem. Did u use an aftermarket pump? I have seen aftermarket pumps do this. I went through 3 bad aftermarket pumps once on a Taurus. They where from Autozone. My bet is a bad pump. Hope this helps
Thanks guys. Your info is muchly helpful and encouraging. I looked under the hood and just groaned. I hurt too much, anymore, to do crap like this in the danged Summer, much less in Winter!
There's way too much snow and the temps are much lower than an old whussy like me needs, for now. When I was your age ( s ) and I had my older Fords, if anything needed done, regardless of season, I'd put a tarp over the area needing work, maybe add a heat lamp and go for it.
Not any more ... that's for certain!!
