I have an 85 f150 300i6 with what appears to be the tremec t170ft trans. Code B on the door panel. Wanted to check the fluid but being under it i see nothing that looks like drain/fill plugs. Tried looking in the cab down through the shifter.
Is there some where else i can look or does this have to be dropped in order to check/change the gear oil?
You should have a fill plug on the side of the tranny about half-way up. If you do not have a drain plug, I know on the old 3 speeds you had to take the lower bolt out that holds the rear housing of the tranny to the main body of the transmission to drain the fluid out.
Some shops have a vacuum pump and actually suck the fluid out through the fill hole, shown above.
My 1986 F150 with SROD transmission was balky when shifting, especially when cold. I changed the transmission fluid and used synthethic 75W90 and it made a great difference.
i have an 89 f150 just did a trans swap went from the five spd M5r2 to the 4spd T170FT (Code-RTS) .. not sure what fluid it takes guessing gear fluid 80w???
