Ok This morning driving to work I noticed a knocking sound under the hood at a stop light. Got to work and opened the hood. It sounds like it's coming from the passenger side about mid to rear motor area. The motor seems to run smooth, not skipping or jumping. Guages all read normal. I don't hear it as much when I'm driving. Doesn't get louder when revving the motor. It does get faster when reving. I am hoping it's an exhaust leak. Any suggestions or ideas to figure out what it might be. 1992 F150 4.9 300 5 speed.
Knocking noises can be a lot of things, especially depending on the pitch and volume. Makes it very difficult to diagnose on a forum unfortunately.
Try using a length of hose (a large brake booster vacuum line, coolant hose, or even a household vacuum cleaner hose) and put one end to your ear and move the other around the engine. When you can specifically hear the sound in the hose, you know you've pin pointed where the sound is coming from. It'll help get you started in the right direction.
