Rusty oil pan fix...not really!

Hi all,

I just changed my oil and noticed how bad the pan had rusted around the lower section. I ordered a Starter kit from 'por-15' for about $20.

I got back under there this morning to scrape, clean, prep and apply the paint. It was then I noticed that the forward section of the pan was even worse. The bubbling up paint looked like a bag of potato chips glued on there. I couldn't get at that area to re-coat. I decided to continue with my original plan to re-finish the section I could get to.

This is my 3rd Ford pick up since 1990. The first oil pan rusted through and needed replacing. The second was pretty rusted when I sold it. Now this one. My dad owned a service station when I was growing up. I’m in my 50’s now and have worked on cars my whole life. I never remember seeing oil pans constantly rusting out. They must be making them really crappy. Either that or I don’t remember so well any more!

I put some pictures in my album.

Happy Holidays to all,

Sorry about your rusted pan. I dont live where I really have to worry about much rust, but once or twice a year I wipe down my oil pan and trans pan etc with some fluid film and think it really works well. Still looks like new.
