Looking at a used 08 escape with a V6 auto and 4x4 running gear. Can anyone tell me is it a 4 5 or 6 speed auto? Looked at a new 11 and it has a 6 speed auto but I am not sure when ford made the change.
The 2008 still has the 4 speed auto. The 2009 has the 6 speed auto and they raised the horsepower to 240 from 200.
I have a 2001 Escape with the 4 speed auto, and a 2007 Fusion with the 6 speed auto. The Fusion with 231 hp does get up and go when needed, but I have found my 2001 to do everything it needs to do and has plenty of zip to get you there too. If your a guy, we never seem to have enough horsepower or torque, but really how often are you running in the Nascar series? If you really like the 08, why don't you just go test drive a new Escape with the 6 speed and see if it really makes that much of a difference to you. If it doesn't, and you really like the 08, than go for it, if not wait until an 09,10 comes on the used market.
Oops.... saw you did check out the 11, so you know what the 6 speed feels like. Personally I like my 01 with the 4 speed auto just fine, had it for 8 years 145,000. Trans has never given me a bit of a problem. Sometimes the Fusion sort of hunts for the right gear when your coming to say a stop light, and the light changes, and you give it gas, only time (occasionally) when it's not smooth. The 01 won't down shift to first say if you floor it past about 20 miles an hour, which has probably saved a lot of wear and tear on the transmission, but it still gets up and goes. I have never felt like I didn't have plenty of power at any time with the 4 speed auto.
I own a 2002 V6 4 speed auto and an 2009 V6 6 speed auto. I prefer the 6-speed but if the price is right on the 2008 you will be fine. One area where there is a meaningful difference is if you use your vehicle for any towing. I tow a boat that weights about 2200 lbs and the 6-speed is far superior. Part of the difference is the extra 40 hp but with two extra gears I can climb hills without having the tranny go all the way to 2nd gear as my 02 had to go. 60 mph in 2nd gear sounds (5000 rpm) like you are trying to kill the car but the newer model will be in 4th gear and running at fewer rpm.
