Clutch Problems

I am having a problem with my clutch that just started like a week ago. When you start to let the clutch out, it starts chattering or being extremely grabby. Not sure those are the best words to describe it, but the truck just starts jumping in little bites (feels like its going to tear the truck apart)!! The free play is adjusted correctly. I bought this truck around a month and a half ago and this problem did not exist. It seems to have gotten worse. If you just let the clutch out really fast it isn't nearly as bad. Are these signs of a clutch going bad? My truck is a 1979 Ranger XLT F-250 4x4. 400c.i. engine with 4 speed manual transmission. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

probably needs the flywheel turned, might have burnt oil on it as well from a leak. Pop the bottom pan under bell housing and have a look for anything weird..

Definately the clutch is going out or you have a leaking rear main on the engine or a leaking front seal on the tranny.

Could be from a previous clutch replacement where they did not re-surface the flywheel as well.

Removing the inspection cover should tell you some about the condition of the seals and how much clutch material you have left.

Thanks for the replies...though it isn't good news. I know the guy I bought it from just put the engine in (used), but I have no idea of the clutch. I guess I will go have closer look in the next couple of days or so. I was hoping to not put in a new clutch until this spring when I put in the new motor...

Just drive it until the clutch pukes, the flywheel needs to be resurfaced anyway and replacements aren't that much as well if you really toast it.

This gets my vote! Dump the clutch like your test driving it from a guy on craigslist!

It will last till it fries..........at this point I dont see that you have much to loose. In all honesty if you kinda "baby" it, it could last quite a while, but if you abuse it, it might not make it out of the driveway

Well I have been "babying" it anyways. Finding different ways to let it out so it doesn't chatter as bad. Hopefully it will last and I guess I will start in on rebuilding this other engine in case I need to do my swap earlier than planned...

The other thing that I thought about is I have another 400 c.i. here that I plan to rebuild this winter that still has the entire clutch on it. I have never looked at it, but it could be in better shape than the one currently on the truck...
