All three of the instrument clusters I have: on each the needles have faded to the exact same kinda orangey/yellow color. I want to repaint, but I don't recall what the OE color was back in '81. I think it was Red. I don't remember them being Orange. Just curious if someone with a better memory knows....
Repaint em anyways to red like you were going to. That would look good :-) I know it wouldn't be original, so that's what it sounds like you are looking for. But red would look good.
Stock color was a fluorescent orange. Mine have also faded to a pale yellow/white color. Except in pictures, I have never seen one of these trucks that still had orange needles.
Red would look nice too. Whatever color you decide to go with, make sure you use a fluorescent! Otherwise, the dashboard lights will not light the needles up, and you end up with black needles at night.
I'd Use fluorescent Red. After it fades it will turn a more stock flourecent orange color after time and last longer than Fluorecent Orange will.
The stock fluorecent orange color is the same color as Road Signs that are used for Road Work and construction signs before 2009. (Fluorecent Federal Safety Orange) (After 2009, they are in the process of switching the color to Fluroecent Pink for road work signs)
