Is there a trick to removing these?

Aren't there a bunch of screws on the other side of the tailgate?

I have the same panel, but all my letters fell off.

Correct, it's held onto the tailgate with screws that go through the inside layer of the gate.

If the truck has a painted on bedliner or something, it will be very hard to remove it if it was painted over. Why the screws and bolts should be removed, paint on the liner, then reattach the screws...

Good luck.

Thanks! I figured wit would be held on by clips or something like that, good to know so I don't go dorking it up more. This will make it harder to put on my other tailgate though...

Yes, there are several holes that have to be drilled in the new gate.

That tailgate trim piece is being reproduced. You can get a new one.

Hey 6fifty, can I have that pic for my references? You still have the emblem left on the tailgate panel.

81 Explorer, don't remind me about all the holes. That's what i'm dreading on my truck. I still have to drill them all for the tailgate panel.

Somebody on here threw away two pretty good condition 80-84 tailgate panels. I won't name any names though. I wasn't too happy about that, because I've yet to find one locally.
