I love how people think lift kits increase ground clearance.

Seems like someone makes "bolt on" portal boxes for a D60F/D70R.

Id be more in favor of that due to the vast availability of parts for the Dana axles vs anything for a unimog.

approach departure and breakover

But tires do all that and help ground clearance (that's the part under the axles .. I know you know that Kris, it's for all the kiddies ) While keeping you're COG low if you don't lift it a brazillion feet in the air.

Correct.

Sorry, I meant to say lift kits increase approach, breakover, and departure, but do not increase ground clearance.

Tires increase all of it.

i think portal boxes on tons would be sweet, but overkill. it'd be better suited for half tons, gets you that little bit of extra ground clearance, and you don't need to worry so much about ring and pinion strength with portals. you'd be using some numerically low (high) gear set because it would be multiplied by whatever hub ratio, usually a 2 to 1.

d44/9'' 2.50-2.75 gears and a set of 40's=PORTALWIN!!!!!!

No Dan, tons better just cuz they r bigger

U would still have them tinny ball joints on the half tons. Add the leverage of portals( its almost like running a huge lift block) and the half ton front not up to the job.
