Battery, alt. or both?

ok...went to a local alternator shop. Alternator checked fine in the truck and on the bench. Checked batteries again and they both checked ok. It did the same thing (voltage gauge almost on 8v) every morning this week except today. It has been in the high teens to low 20s all week. This morning it was mid 20's and it did not do it. I've kept my eye on the voltage readout on the inverter plugged into the cig. lighter outlet and it maintains 14.3-14.2 even when the gauge reads low. I'm starting to lean towards something wrong with the gauge. I'm wondering if it goes through some kind of circuit board that may have a crack in it and when it is cold the crack opens up and when it get warmer the circuit closes and the gauge comes up. Does this sound like a possibility? I forgot to mention in my earlier posts that when the gauge stays low the ABS light stays on for a couple of minutes then goes out. I don't know if that is related or not.
