I still have the original after 10 yrs and 140K. Am I tempting fate? What fan wrench works on this motor? I need a part no. Any secrets to successfully replace the pump? I also notice the lower radiator hoses (that's one crazy lower hose) to the oil filter wears where it sits on the cross member. Has anyone tried to minimize that rubbing? Thanks.
I would leave the old pump in there. The aftermarket pumps are hit and miss. You are taking a risk when you put on a Chinese made or rebuilt water pump. My Ranger has 200k on it and it has the original pump. If you replace I would consider OEM. Occasional weeping from the weep hole is ok as long as it does not get excessive. If there is no play in the bearings then leave it be. I have not removed the fan on the V10 but it probably has a backwards thread. Usually you can use a large open end wrench on the nut and you will need a way to hold the pulley. I fabbed a holder out of a piece of flat metal with some holes in it that matched a couple of the pulley bolts.
I have never seen a catastrophic water pump failure. Usually they start to leak and then the bearings go and you have plenty of warning. You are not going to get stranded somewhere as long as you have some water or preferably coolant mix with you.
