Stalked By Raptor.....

I am a member of Outbackers.com a nation wide site of Outback 5th wheel and travel trailer owners. We have a great deal of fun on that site and routinely get together for rally's and such, but I will stay on topic.

This 6.0L forum is a great place. I have learned a lot and though I did not catch some of the known problems until they happened to me, I have had a lot of input and guidance that has helped to calm my worst fears.

So I'd like to give back a little. This was a Post I placed on Outbackers earlier this year. I hope my fellow 6.0L folks will enjoy...

Two sundays ago, my DW (dear Wife) and I decided to go to York Beach, Long Sands, Short Sands in Maine to do something "fun". We tend to be pretty busy people and other than our camping weekends or holidays life sometimes gets in the way of just having a good time.

Anyway, We were running into traffic on 95 South into NH and I made the decision early on to get off at exit 3 to take rt 33 through Greenland, Stratham and into Exeter to avoid the potential back up the may lay in wait. Sure enough as we passed the traffic circle in Portsmouth NH I could see brake lights and stacked up traffic.

I began edging over to the right and motion caught my eye in the lower passengerside teardrop mirror. I see a white 1/2 ton pick-up truck with a black grill and huge black letters on it spelling out FORD. The truck approached quickly on my left side, passed to the left behind me and was kept in check by a car on my driver side quarter panel. Looking over I saw the emblem on the truck as being an F-150. Looking a second time I saw an additional emblem that read Raptor

I thought to myself. Well..self..that's a cool name for a truck but what the heck is a Raptor. The car checking his forward movement passed to the left and I looked over and the driver was smiling at me.

I could read his face....You like this don't you? Don't you?! But you don't really know what this is..... Would you like some of this? Hmmmm? He stomped on it and the F-150's engine sounded a bit different....through my closed driverside window. I wasn't going anywhere in traffic.

He wasn't able to get much further than a car length or two ahead as I passed again to the right. Traffic was now beginning to slow quickly on the highway, but my exit was clear and I continued to the lights at the end of the ramp. I looked in my review mirror and the Raptor had made it all the way over into the breakdown lane just past the exit and backed up a bit, making the exit traveling in the lane to my right.

The light turned green and as I was turning left onto 33, I heard that engine noise again. There was no traffic ahead of me, no one behind. My DW, oblivious, was listening to WHOM 94.9 when I stomped on the accelerator. Her head and back becoming one with the grey leather seat of the Lariat Passenger seat as the turbo kicked in on the 6.0L
diesel engine and the tachometer spiked to about 3.2K. The Raptor didn't over take me. He tried.. he did...DW looked at me and asked what I was doing. I told her that I was clearing the baffles. She asked me if they were clear and I said yes, they were. She said good, don't clear them again, please.

So I needed to find out about this "Raptor". I found out all right. It seems I ran into the tamer 5.4L version. Not the rabid 6.2L version. Had I ran into the latter that truck may have had me for lunch.

The Raptor again passed behind me and into a left turn lane for a gas station. As I looked over all I could see was toothy grin and a hat... Power Stroke 1....Raptor 0....

Nice kill. What are the "obvious" differences in the 6.2 and 5.4 Raptors?

Isn't it amazing how the soot needs blown out at the exact same time someone beside you needs to do the same thing?

It is strange how coincidental that seems.

I am not sure what I would say. I assume that sort of info would go into my profile somewhere but, not sure where. There isn't much to say about it. It is all stock. new EGR Cooler, Oil Cooler and EGR Valve. I intend on putting a coolant filter in and I am looking for some modifications to do.

I have added XM/Sirius reciever and mounted it to the driverside overhead console. I need to reroute the antenna to be mounted on the roof. Right now it has been routed around the passengerside windshield to the front of the dashboard near the lower middle section of the windshield. It works ok but is directional and with greater that 180 degrees being masked by the cab, it doesn't recieve the way I'd like at all.

I am setting aside some money for an Edge Insight CTS and would like to put some other electronics into it. I am a Nuclear Instrumentation and Controls Technician and like tinkering with things. The 4 AUX switches are just begging to be used for something!

I have had a 1989 Reg Cab 2wd, 1998 Ext Cab 4wd, and 2002 Ext Cab 4wd Ford Rangers, a Ford F-250 with the 6.8L V-10 and I went to the dark side before the F-250 and had a Chevy 1500HD. Now I have the F-350. I looked for 6-7 months to find this one. I waited a long while to have a truck of this size and type and I love it!

The Raptor is known for suspension, not speed.

I think of it as more of a reminder that mine needs to be cleaned out. I'm ever so forgetful about things like that.

Good story
My copilot doesn't fall for the 'baffles' thingy...

I have to adjust the mirrors so she can't see and I say I am merging with traffic

but tuned as it is and her getting used to my driving.... I can get away with 70% power without "Retribution" !

I assumed the latter because looking it up on the internet showed several versions. One that had been mod'ed and took on several vehicles in the quarter mile. Beating them soundly. I believe I found them on You Tube and the Ford Site.

Worth a look if you haven't seen them before!
