the air compressor for the suspension is making a noise when i start in the morning. i am thinking of replacing. how much work is this? what kind of money is this unit? any opinions on this?
The sound may be from the rubber isolators on the pump frame being shot. This allows the pump frame to hit the fender well and generates a lot of noise. You may want to check this out before buying a new pump.
I agree with 2trux; 99% it's just the bushings. Sad thing though is Ford only sells the entire unit even though the bracket can be removed. If you find a place that sells just the bushings, please post it up because I need to buy a few sets for mine.
it is not hard to replace do a internet search i forget the company but they rebuild the commpressor with new drier and mounting bracket for about 150. it took me about an hour to replace the compresor.
Before you go a buy a new unit, remove the battery and battery case, then remove the bolts holding the windshield washer fluid (and 2 electrical connectors) and the electrical connector at the AC line near the front (optional). At this point, you will have clear access to the pump. Do not remove the lines at this time. Grab the unit and see if it wobbles pretty freely. If it does just order a set of isolators (see link below). When you get them you can install them without removing the unit, just remove the screws and turn the unit on it's side being careful not to damage the airlines. You will need a torx screw driver (t-20) to remove the the isolators. Again, you don't need to remove the airline or the unit to change the isolators. As far the time to RR - it took me about 30 minutes (if that), but I've done it a couple times before, so it's easier now. Now get busy.
Just did the isolator kit repair on my '04 Navigator. What a difference! It took me a little longer than Methodical_1 but it's a straightforward repair.
