I just recently had my straight six engine rebuilt and now everytime after sitting for longer than like 4 or more hours it has cold starts. i have to turn it over 10+ times, turn off the key and then crank it over again to get it to start. It was doing this to me before i got my engine rebuilt too and now it still does it. i have new plugs, new wires, new cap and a new rotor on the dist. could this be my coil? or even my dist?
I would guess it has to do with the fuel system leaking the pressure back. The next time you go to do a cold start try turning the switch on and waiting about 3 seconds and turn the switch back off and on for another 3 seconds, repeat this about 15 times and see if it starts quicker.
Possibly leaking past the fuel pressure regulator and back to the gas tank. Or maybe the fuel pump in the tank leaking back, if you have dual tanks and they are both operational you could eliminate that possibility. Could be the injectors leaking into the cylinders, but that would cause a delayed warm start.
both tanks do work but when i fill up the rear tank and have my switch on rear, as im driving it is pumping some of my gas into the front tank as i am using it.
well i what i did is after having not driving it over night i turn the key on, wait about 5 seconds, turn the key off and do that about 4 times and then turn the engine over and it starts right up. fuel pressure regulator? i have no idea
Probably either the fuel pressure regulator or leaking back at the fuel pump. I'm not sure how you would determine which. I would do a couple more cold starts in that manner to make sure that one start wasn't a fluke.
it starts right up after repeating that process again and everytime i do it. im probably just going to go ahead and get a fuel pressure regulator and start there because i just ordered new injectors to put in also so i might as well do that while i have my intake off
i had a bad check valve in my fuel sending unit on my 97 firebird. I had to let it purge up to pressure by turning on the key and waiting for it to prime up. Replaced the entire sending unit, which had the pump on it as well as the bad check valve. All was well.
