I followed those instructions this summer. Really easy to do yourself. Some argue you have to balance the rotating assembly any time it comes apart. Some say not. I beleive it is cheap insurance if you have the time to send it off to get it done. I didn't do mine...
OK, so I rebuild it myself. What else should I do while it's off, I keep reading about 1.0 housing? Tell me about it please. I have a DP tuner and haul heavy. I was planning on keeping my ebpv and sending my tuner in for the Ex Brake.
I assume I should do the WW while it's apart?
yes, do the WW. I didn't do mine because I don't like the noise it makes. I had the surge issue and had to pull the turbo again to put the WW in. First WW got chewed up when the turbo went out... I don't have any experience with the ported housing. I'd like to though
I gutted my pedestal and removed my EBPV. We'll see how that works out through the winter.
I noticed your web site has a 517 area code number. Are you near Lansing?
I would get them to balance the whole thing. Not sure if you can do it yourself as far as the balancing part.
I want Ron to do my turbo, but I have not been able to get him to answer his phone or return my call. This does not make me feel confident that if there is a problem in the future that I will get good service. A buddy of mine had him rebuild his turbo and is very happy, he's been trying to get a return call from Ron for over a week now. That's not the service I am looking for.

I am typing this right after I talked to him and just hung up the phone

Don't know what to say, My friend has left several messages with him and I left a message on his machine this morning. I only have so much time, I will not spend it on someone that does not have the courtesy to return my calls, especially business.
I rebuilt my turbo and am actually surprised how much play it still has! I would've thought it would be much less, I realize there's only so much you can do with bushings but WOW!!
is it side to side or in/out play? IIRC it can have a little side to side but it shouldn't have any end play. If you search on posts be me I posted some pics of a thrust bearing that was so bad I had about 1/4 inch end play and it chewed up the WW
No end play, side-side I guess you'd say. The thrust bearing is good. I just don't like the bushings I guess, there's play between the bushing and cast housing. The bushing is perfect between the shaft and bushing.
I can see a bearing turbo in my future. Incase you haven't noticed, this is my process for talking myself into something
Like Mike said, a little side-to-side is okay, but any in & out is BAD. Are you 100% sure you have it together correctly?? I have rebuilt two of these, and have found them very easy to to. I have yet to have it "balanced". I have run a stock turbo with a WW (not rebalanced), a rebuilt van turbo with stock wheel (also not rebalanced), and the latter has been holding together at over 35psi. I can't complain......
The ported housing is very nice -- not as loud as the WW at the peak (around 10-12psi), but a more constant whistle over the RPM curve. No surge at all, and I drive the pizz out of mine.
The 1.0 exh housing is a good mod, and the WW or ported housing is also highly recommended. Since you want to keep the EBPV, you might inspect the actuator arm in the pedestal and decide if you want to rebuild it while you have everything out. Mine was leaky at ~80k when I did mine. Personally, I think the EBPV exhaust brake isn't a very good idea, but that's me...
I went with the WW since I am considering a BB turbo in the future, decided that was the way to keep this rebuild cost down. I'm not going to balance either, seems many don't and works fine. I have my opinions on balancing these that probably plenty of people won't agree with but it's my truck and my opinion
I am quite positive it is put together right. I measured the bushings and the housing and all the play is between the bushing and housing, not between bushing and shaft. There is no end play so I guess I'm good. I figure it's no worse than before I rebuilt it so I'm better off one way or another. I did have end play when I took it apart.
