Bad Fuel Gauge??

My fuel gauge is stuck at half full regardless of the actual gas in the tank. The dealership replaced the sending\pump unit and the problem remains. The low fuel light still comes on even though the gauge says half a tank. I've been told that my guage is probably faulty and that I need to replaced the whole gauge cluster. The ford dealership said they could have my cluster sent off for repair for $550 or I could buy a used one and have it reprogrammed for $160. They will not be able to change the mileage on the used cluster though. Is this true?? Has anyone had any experience with this?? Is the dealer trying to rip me off by having my cluster repaired for $550? I found some used clusters for around $100. The dealer said I would not be able to start the truck unless it was reprogrammed and that I would have to provide him two keys to do this. Guess it has something to do with the security features.
Any help or advice is appreciated.

Hello Bubbasmith...welcome to the forum!
In essence its true.I suggest you go the salvage cluster route, and have it reprogrammed.Unfortunately you will have to go to the dealership to have the PATS(Passive Anti Theft System) system reprogrammed.Miles showing on the clock arent "resettable" and will follow the used cluster...you could come out better or worse...
My thoughts on the 500+ "repair" is kinda steep.IF you know someone that is good with "intricate" mechanics, perhaps that person could remove the gauge from the salvage cluster and install it in your original unit.
I have done this on some GM vehicles such as the wife,s Impala, and had good results.

Thanks for the replies. Still haven't decided on what I'm going to do yet. Most likely, I'll go the route.
