Which Windshield Wipers?
#19
I use the Valeo Ultimate wiper blades available on TireRack. And you can't go wrong with the buy one get one free deal.
Valeo Buy One Get One Free Offer
What I did was order four blades (two for front and two for rear) so I could get two free blades. I did this two years ago and still haven't replaced the rear blade. I did replace the front ones about a year ago however. I'd also go for the 22inch blades for the front.

I have a question about blades. I recenlty changed blades. I put on 24" Rain-x and I got several spots where it looked like the blade didn't hit the winshield so I went out and bought some Michelins in stock size thinking that was my problem. I still have a spot where it misses directly in my view but it hits more than the rainx ones did. Any suggestions on getting a fully clean windshield? Nebraska isn't the easiest place to drive in the winter when you can't see.

Last time I replaced mine I was looking at what was available at Walmart. There were cheap ones for under $3 and the Michelins for around $20. I bought one of each to do my own little test.
They both worked great when new. Gave them the wife test and she couldn't tell them apart. At about 4 months, I asked her again and she gave the nod to the cheap one. At about 6 months, the $20 Michelin wiper actually broke and had to be replaced.
Bet you can guess what I replaced it with.
(Oh, that cheap wiper blade lasted just fine for over a year. Not bad for three bucks!)

If you bought the cheap blades at Walmart, you probably bought the Pylon brand that run $3.47 each in my area. Here's a bit of info you might be interested in - Pylon is actually made by Michelin! Also, the next time you visit one of those huge truck stops on the freeway take a look at what brand wiper blade they carry. Most of what I find in stock is Pylon. Is it because they're cheap? Or is it because they work? Maybe both, because I'm able to change wiper blades twice a year on my Ex and I still come out money ahead over the more expensive blades and I've never had a problem.
As for streaking, some of that may be due to road oil and bug juice that becomes embedded in small micro chips in the glass. Every time the wiper goes over the glass, some of this mixture is removed and shows up as streaks. That's why every spring I use a good degreaser that won't harm paint like one of those "orange" cleaners on the market and I use it to clean my windshield four - yes four - times in a row. This has eliminated streaking on my windshield for several years now.

I have used higher and lower priced blades. Over the years, I found that the Rain-X line is really good. Wipers. Washer fluid. Windshield treatment.
When the wiper blades are new, even the inexpensive wiper blades work. Not once, have I bought cheap wipers, and just couldn't see. The cheap blades, when new out of the box, are effective. Keep in mind that you get cheap blades for different reasons......mine is because I am cheap! Cheap blades just don't last as long. They begin streaking sooner. Chep blades degrade in the sun, and fall apart.
Pricing & Availability - If you blow a fuse in the middle of the night, you will pay whatever to replace that fuse. If you buy fuses at a reasonable price, you'll have them when you need them. Wipers are the same way. You just can't carry them in your glovebox like you do with spare fuses.
Some guys will curse and buy whatever they can at the last minute. Just as a storm rolls in, and all the better quality wiper blades are sold out! Then they are stuck with whatever is available at that moment in time......at Wal*Mart, a gas station, Jiffy Lube, where ever. And that does happen. Rain falls, you discover that you can't see, and then have to replace your wiper blades as soon as possible.
Not me. I am cheap. I wait. When there is a good price, I try to stock up. My last batch of inexpensive wiper blades were AutoTex Pink. When I bought them, they were $3. Did they perform? Yes. Absolutely. In my area, we get something called an "atmospheric river", the "El Nino", and "La Nina". I'm not a weather girl, but we could get up to a 1/2 dozen heavy storm cycles within 6 months. Point is that the cheap wipers worked. They just didn't last past 24 months. Your mileage may vary.
If I had to guess, I would say that my Rain-X wiper blades can last more than 2 years, with dozens of storm cycles. Whereas the cheap wipers may be good for 6 months to 1.5 years. I'll test the wipers during dry months with washer fluid spray. In the course of my commute, I get more bird poop than bugs on my windshield, and a layer of dirt and dust develops within a week. Sometimes the streaking is simply caused by debris such as pollen trapped between the wiper blade and the windshield glass.
Rain-X is a better wiper than the least expensive wiper in the store, or what the gas station sells. Is it worth the money? That is your call. Spend more now. Or change wipers more often. Buy 1 Rain-x, or 3 low priced wipers.
On a side note, way back in the days when I saddled a dinosaur & rode it like an ugly date on prom night, kids used to buy these wiper blades that looked like 2 windshield wipers stuck together. Anybody remember using those?

It looks like 16" is the right size. But that doesn't mean that you can't take a tape measure, and figure out if you want a different size. Try a 12".
