4wd and ABS issues

My 2006 Escape limited 4wd V6 is having some issues - it says to service the 4wd and the brake system on the message center and the 4wd and abs lights on the dash stay on or flash at times.

The first time this happened we were on the highway and it was raining alot, a couple days later it went away. Now it is doing it again but it seems to be right after we had alot of snow and slushy roads.

Can something just be getting wet or dirty? I thought that it would be the abs rings but they looked fine when I checked them out last time. I also checked all the fuses that have anything to do with the abs and 4wd systems.

Any ideas?

It sounds like the sensor that reads the tone ring each one hasits own one...make sure its not the ring cause it can be cracked and look good...try and turn them.....the sensor is a proximity switch.....if you need the ring rockauto.com has them for under $10 and cheaper sensors too....

just had the same problem and i started a thread on it here . I found changing the whole axle a better solution but i guess it would depend on the mileage and if you are going to keep car forever like i.m going to do. axle at advance is like 55.00 ,tone ring 15.99 it just seemed logical to replace whole thing but let us know if it was tone ring or sensor as I'm curious.....................

Would this cause an issue with the speedo as well? Every now and then it will just stick at like 20 mph and eventually go back to normal. I have it booked in to go to the shop but not till next week - damn winter tire season! Just hoping that it works out ok and that the weather stays not too bad so we can get by with no ABS.

as my earlier post said I bought the whole axle but I didn't mention that the tone ring comes pre installed on axle . so if you have any boot issues or noise the axle makes sense from all angles

when my tone ring went my abs light came on solid and my FWD light would flash 8 times then go off for a minute then re flash again, also when i used my brakes it would activate the abs ever so slightly but you could hear and feel the abs kind of trying to engage , when i looked under the vehicle at cv joint there was the cracked tone ring just sitting there loose and then the adventure began...........................

yea we get no abs at this time. If you hit the brakes they just lock up - no abs sounds or functions. We have snow here on the roads still in my area so it's easy to check that. I have to crawl back under it and check the rings, when I did the last time it did this they all looked fine. But then (just a couple weeks ago) it went back to normal after a day or so. This time it seems to be sticking around.

Just crawled under the Escape and check all the ABS rings - they all looked fine, no teeth chipped off, no cracks, none spinning freely... So it would seem that it is an ABS sensor issue perhaps?

Im having the same exact problem with our 2005 Limited 4x4 just started this morning! So a crack or bad abs ring will cause a 4wd issue? what kins of job is it to change the abs ring?

it will cause your 4WD light to come on and blink 8 times then go off for a minute then repeat ,your abs light would stay on solid. It is a pretty straight forward job to do as there are a few ways to do it I could not get my ball joint to budge so i disconnected the strut bolts which gave me clearance to get axle out of the knuckle . I replaced the whole axle as tone ring was 15.99 and whole axle with tone ring on was 55.00 depends on your mileage and how long you are going to keep the car i guess................
