Tire comparison and quick question.

Ok, I'm trying to decide on some tires for my 08 F250 and I just cannot choose. I'm stuck between three tires: Toyo M/T's, Nitto Trail Grapplers or Pro Comp Xtreme A/T's. The size I'm looking for are either 35X12.50R20 or 37X12.50(13.50)R20. I've read all the info on the manufactures websites and still cannot decide. Can anyone offer some actual info about these?? Mileage, road noise, rideability, etc... Most of my driving will be on the road, but I live on a farm and really don't like needing 4WD in the grass...

Quick question: Yesterday after leaving church, I pulled up to the stop sign and then took off leaving a long trail of white/grey smoke. My dad was following me and he said it smelt like un-burnt diesel fuel. Any ideas? I didn't notice if the regen was working at that time and I don't believe it was the white smoke associated with the intercooler.

Thanks for any help!!!

Don't know about the tires...I would make sure that whatever you choose are e-rated. I run coopers myself.

As far as the smoke issue, It could be either the moisture in the cac or coolant, maybe fuel but fuel most of the would be black.

How is your levels on a cold motor before starting it up?

Dont know how you use your truck but in my opinion you cant beat BFG AT. Im running them on my 2010 250 fx4. They are e rated and awesome in snow rain and everyday driving. If you see a lot of mud you might want something more aggressive. Mine are 305/65/18 works out to about 34 x 12.5. Good luck.

The smoke issue sounds like regen to me. Mine used to do it too from time to time. Seems to depend on the temps., ie: early in your drive, outside temp., etc.
The tire question is a little more difficult, but if you're driving mostly on the road with only some off roading on your farm, I'd be thinking about a good AT type tire. Basically, the bigger and knobby the tire , the more noise you'll get and probably less MPGs. The BFGs mentioned are supposed to be good. I have Toyo Open Country A/Ts. Nitto Terra Grappler would be a good choice too. Also, try to stick with a tire size that approximates 33" to 35" diameter, unless you're lifted, just to be sure of good clearance/turning ability, and suspension travel. Hope this helps in your tire search....

I use Goodyear Silent Armor. To me a better ride than the BFG that came on truck.

mine lets out the white/grey smoke only at times when in regen only. Have not seen smoke any other time.

I'm with ya' on that one. I run them, (stock size) and had them on a 2001 F-150 and they are outstanding, very quiet on the road and excellent traction of road.

I have run all three of those tires and for my money I would go with the Toyo's.
They are noisier than Nitto's but about the same as the Pro Comps, overall they are very quiet for and MT.
From a traction standpoint the nittos are slightly better on the road but the Toyo's are a very close second, and off road there is no comparison. The Toyo's are miles ahead of the other two.
I have run Toyo's on 3 different vehicles and have gotten over 40k miles with plenty of tread left in all 3 instances. I got about 55k on my 6.0 liter.

The Toyo's ride great, in my opinion they are better than the Nitto's. I had a hard time keeping the Nitto's balanced, maybe a bad set but I have heard the same thing from others.

Overall the Nitto's and Toyo's are both much better than the ProComps, IMHO.

Thank you all for the information!! This is the exact info I was looking for. How many miles did you get out of the Nitto's?

I've always heard great things about the Toyo's and have always wanted a set!! I'll probably go with them.

We ran some Pro Comp At's on our '05 F350 and I wasn't too pleased with the tire wear or the traction.

If you are thinking about the Toyo MT, then i think you should take this tire into consideration. It is the Mickey Thompson ATZ MT tire. I had the Toyos on my other truck and after a few thousand miles they became more and more loud. I am now running the Mickey's on my 09' and they are much quieter on the road, they are still extremely aggressive off road, yet extremely civil on the road. They are much more quiet than the Toyos, and any MT tire I have ever had.

I only ran the Nitto's for about 20k but they were wearing well. If I had to guess somewhere between 40 and 50 k would have been it.

I have looked at those several times and I read that they have 30 percent more tread, but are they made out of softer rubber to make the ride smoother? How are they wearing? How many miles are you expecting to get out of them?

The rubber seems the same to me, the tire just isn't as blocky, like the toyo mt. So not as much air gets trapped in the treads, and the road noise is limited. However, offroad it is a monster! These tires have much more sidewall grip than most tires. I have 7k miles on them with no change in manners. Although it's early I have no doubts these will make 40k. And so far they are wearing good, better than my toyos. I have rotated once, but will stay on top of this. In the toyos defense I ran them 30k on my truck, sold them to a buddy who ran them another 20k and although they are bald... They never let either of us down.
Why are you looking at both mt and at tires? Even the most civil MT will drive you nuts if you're also looking for AT's... I'm having a hard time lately justifying the use of my MTs, when I do 95% road, if not more. If you want a great AT, look also at the Michelin! This will be one of the quietest, longest lasting, most efficient tires you can find.

I have the ProComps on my 99 now and I wont buy them again, they are wearing funny, and they are a directional tire so you can't cross rotate them.... they have about 20,000 on them, have been rotated at 5000 miles and two of them are are pretty much toast.... the truck has had the alignment checked twice since i put these tires on and its came back perfect both times. maybe I got a couple bad ones but I wont be going back with them. I ran Nittos before these and got almost 50,000 out of them and they wore perfectly even until they were bald....

Well the pro comps are out of the picture!! Thanks for helping me dodge that bullet...

All of you may think its silly, but I really just like the looks of the more aggressive tires! I think it may just come down to which tires come in the size I want. I really don't want to go over 12.5" wide to keep more debris from hitting the side of the truck. I believe the Toyo's, Nitto's and Mickey Thompson's will all be excellent tires.

Does anyone have 37" tires on there truck? If so, what kind of MPG drop can I expect? Any problem with gearing? I have 3.73 in mine. I'm going to at least level the truck, but as of right now I'm planning on installing the Ready Lift SST hybrid lift, 3.5" in front and 1"-3" in rear.
