Rough running V-10

Ok - so here's the story so far.

For a while now the V-10 has been acting a little interesting. It'll idle a little rough - accelerate rough up till i get the rpm's up and then it smoothes out. I've had it die on me probably 2 times but that was a couple weeks ago.

Come to find out my scanner i had wasn't cutting it so i shelled out some dough and picked up the AutoEnginuity scanner with the Enhanced pack for Ford. So far the only code i'm getting is a drivetrain one (i've forgotten what it was but i have it at work written down).

The two times it has died on me i was at a stoplight with foot on the brake. I happen to notice that the OD light started to flash and then the truck cut out.

I changed plugs and boots last year and it seemed to help out for a while but its been getting worse for a while now. At some point i thought it might have been one (or more) of the coil packs but i didn't want to just start tossing parts on.

I've replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the K&N filter, cleaned the Mass Air Flow - still getting the rough acceleration.

I'm kind of at a loss since i'm not getting any kind of code - though i'm still working on figuring out how the new scanner works - also have to figure out how to check pending codes

On another note I noticed a weird reading on one of the O2 sensors so i made a couple calls - come to find out i should have 4 O2 sensors total but i've only got 2......

Hope this gets the ball rolling - i'll still mess around with the scanner and see what I can come up with.

Thanks,
Ed

I looked in your profile and you list an 02, so I will presume as such. I think that the 02 only had 2 O2 sensors. One on each exhaust down pipe before the y pipe. I have been under there, and only replaced 2 when I needed to replace mine. No other wires or sensors, as they are after the cat on other trucks.
I would check out the IAC, and clean or replace as necessary. I have included a thread showing the placement so you can find it easier. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...rsion-v10.html

Next I would take out one or more of the boots and just check how they are holding up, and down in the hole where the plug is. Just to check for any water intrusion. Others have had problems with the boots rotting out and causing shorts that caused drivetrain codes to come up. For what it is worth I would also check behind you fuse panel for water corrosion, again that is common problem with the w/s leaking and water dripping in there causing issues. Keep up posted.

A quick update:

I was able to get out in the garage last night for a little to start on this again - here's what i found/did.

Went ahead and replaced the IAC. Noticed it was pretty oily inside and there was no gasket installed. Put a new IAC on and a gasket and will see what happens.

Pulled couple plugs and noticed they were VEDY white! I'm trying to remember how long ago i put these in but i bought the truck when it had 116,000 on it and i'm at 165,000 right now and i've had it about 4 years. I put these plugs in about a year ago....

I also noticed some oil residue above the passenger side manifold cover around the area where the PVC is. I changed that about a year ago also but i noticed that the hose connecting it wasn't on very tight so i put a small clamp on it.

I'm off to work so will see how it runs today.

Thanks for the help,
Ed

White to light gray is normal for the spark plugs on a fuel injected computer controlled no-lead-in-the-fuel gasoline engine.

On the autoenginuity you can go to a page where it will tell you miss fires, sorry I haven't had to use mine in a while but it's there. That's where you want to start, look for percent miss fire and see if any certain cylinders is giving you a problem, then work on just those cylinders.

Sorry - been a while since I have posted and have been busy with a bunch of other stuff.<O</O
<O</O

Truck has been running ok for the most part - little rough every so often but not much - better than what it was doing. I even went so far as to 'rotate' the fuel injector's a quarter turn - probably a wild hair i was told about from a friend of a friend of a friend. Maybe I was wishing it would help - maybe maybe not <O</O
<O</O

Well tonight I was at a stop sign and about to enter traffic and the OD light started to flash on me again - been quite a while since that had happened and the truck died on me. Cranked it up and it started just fine and off home I go.<O</O
<O</O

Get home and toss the computer on it and holy crap there are codes this time!! I'm showing a P0720 and a P0722. I forgot about checking the misfires part....<O</O
<O</O

So back to the forums to see what i can figure out I'd rather not do a shotgun approach to fixing this but I started reading what other people have had to do and it sounds crazy.<O</O
<O</O

So any ideas or should I go with the first theory that the OSS 'may' be bad? I even read where one person changed their battery and battery cables........ Been reading so much my head is spinning - time for a break

Thanks for looking,
Ed<O</O<O</O

Wouldn't the OD light flashing indicate an issue with the tranny? May be unrelated to all the other issues, but that's what I would start thinking. Could it be possible that something in the tranny is locking up and killing the engine? I have no experience with these issues, but like I said, the OD light flashing would have me at least looking for something wrong with the tranny.

Out of the 3 times it has ever died on me this is the first time i've been able to get a code. All three times have been at stops - not while truck was moving - good thing The rough running isn't so bad anymore since i did the other stuff but tonight it just wasn't happy.

I've checked for water on top where the plugs go - nothing there. I park in a covered parking garage at work and in my garage at home so it doesn't see much in the way of extended sitting in rain.

With the code i've got i'm tempted to pick up a new OSS and toss it in there as well as start checking the wiring from it and see what I can come up with.

Checked the date on my battery and its been in there quite a while so may pick on up tomorrow for good measuer. Been in there since June 2003 so I figure i got my money's worth from it

Thanks for looking,
Ed

Can you get trans codes from a regular code reader? I thought I remembered being disappointed cause I read somewhere you needed some high dollar reader to pull trans codes.

I found out the hard way that my original code reader wasn't doing squat so i picked up the Autoenginuity setup. At least now i'm able to get codes even though it's not ODBII.

Got the info from this thread and started checking mine to find that out.

The OD light flashing would mean something in the tranny. That said, there is a spot on the end of the gear shifter that is known to rub thru the wiring that comes from the OD button that causes shorting, and all sorts of electrical issues. You need to pull out the key cylinder and the column covers to check it. It is a quick easy look just to rule stuff out. Here is a post covering it: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...uestion-3.html

I also recall somewhere reading on fte someone having issues like this, and as I recall they had a boot that connects the cop to the plug cracked and shorting out causing funny codes and drivability issues like your having.

18 mile drive to work on back roads and freeway with a few stop signs seemed to go good today. No flashy OD light and only a couple 'light' sputtering feeling areas but that was on a back road going up a slight incline running about 1250 RPM. Truck ran smooth for the rest of the drive.

I'll see if i can get the laptop on it again and see about figuing out how to see the missfires on what cylinder - learn as i go here with the new scanner

Thanks for the ideas,
Ed

For what its worth:

I have a '99 250, V10. About a month ago it started running really rough at idle and under slight accel/low rpm. I saw a significant decrease in MPG, dropped from ~12mpg to 7-8mpg. Have you noticed a decrease in MPG? I replaced the plugs, fuel filter and the air cleaner. Cleaned the Throttle body and MAF. Truck still ran rough. I ended up replacing all ten COP's and the truck is running great (been 3 days ~100miles). Haven't calculated mileage yet because I haven't burned up a tank. As for the flashing OD light sounds like wallz is on to something with the OD button/wires rubbing and shorting out. Also, a friend of mine with an 01 or 02 F350 V10 had rough idle problems and has been replacing individual COP's. I think he has replaced 6 now and each time it has fixed his rough idle problems. Keep us posted.

No decrease in gas mileage - hangs in there at about 11.5 or so.

Went in today to get the battery replaced - the one i had was from June 2003 - it's served me well. Had not left me stranded yet but I could tell that it wasn't cranking as fast as it probably could be.

Right after i got the battery installed i was backing out and the truck started flashing the OD light and died on me.

Then it did it again while sitting at the stoplight. Even after getting it started up again the OD light flashed for a while.

Looks like it'll be another evening in the garage looking things over. I hope to be able to find the missfire on cylinder page in the Autoenginuity scanner just so i can see if maybe a COP is adding to the problems. I'm also going to check out the wires to the OSS I hope.

I'll start with that I guess.

Ed
