Help!! Fluctuating Oil Pressure!! Eratic
I think you have something going on when you are talking about that spring... because in idle it seems to operate ok.. but under load my oil pressure goes totally bananananas!@!!$#
"I'll take a stab at this and see if others have a different opinion. About the only scenario I can envision that would cause this, would be if you were pulling uphill in a lower gear, with the engine reving with high RPM's. I could see a weak oil pressure relief spring giving way under a constant, high oil pressure load, thus causing the low pressure you experienced. Once the engine shuts down, the pressure relief valve closes and the engine operates normally. "
How would i go about fixing this on an 5.0l V8 Ford Explorer? Where would i find this spring?
When you say Oil Pressure, do you mean the guage or have you actually tested the oil pressure? The guage is not real and sometimes causes problems. The only thing it's designed to do is show low pressure. In fact, some have had the guage stick in it's resting position and this is why Ford installed a little peg under it to hold the needle up when resting. If your X rides fine otherwise, then there is probably nothing wrong.
Well you see i hooked up an external oil pressure guage and i experienced the same thing.
My girlfriends father has a similar engine and same problem so he says.... where he replace an oil pressure regulator valve next to the oil filter? Is this feasible?
Before flushing the engine many times 2 weeks ago.. when the oil pressure dropped.. i assumed it was a bad sending unit but the engine begain to knock.. no good. Hooked up the external guage and found it was registering the same thing.
Cru52, you have narrowed it down. Your oil pressure relief valve might be at fault, but I doubt it. It sounds to me like a clogged oil pump pick-up screen.
Is this a high mileage engine and did the problem get worse after the engine flushes?
