This is how I mounted the Stancor vertically . LINK

This is what my old GPR looked like at 82k. Badly pitted contact surfaces.

Dan, FYI he's an early bird truck so no AIH.

I'd say check your glow plugs, but if it's more than 5 years old replace the relay. Changing to 5w-40 will help a lot too. My pickup will reliably start a -20* as long as everything is working as it should.
Ok, Good to know.

What are the best glow plugs to put in?
I am going to order the Stancor today.
I am switching to full syn 5w40 syn today. What oil are you running?
Sounds like i don't need to address anything but my whole pre starting system... and maybe a starter since i worked it so hard. I can't find the threads about the starter that a lot of people are switching too. any advice on that?

I saw Guzzle's is mounted... not vertically... is there an advantage to doing it this way?

Buy the Motorcraft ZD-11 glow plugs. Clay has them. I run just the Rotella 5w-40 synth oil found at Wally World.

Great image Robin!

Just like everyone else said, replace the glow plugs, GPR, and switch to synthetic oil. Check your batteries, may be time for new ones, and make sure you have good connections.

I switched to rotella T6 last winter with over 250K on my truck, it has never started better in the cold weather! With a little warming from the GP's, it pops off like it's been warmed up already, almost eliminated the cold start romps and rough idling.

If you're gonna be a doing a bunch of "cold starts" with no way to plug in the block heater, definitely replace what is needed. Make sure you have good batteries (and alternator) and cables with good connections.

How'd you sleep in your truck with it so cold and not running? Got a good sleeping bag? Or is your "buddy" of the opposite gender???

The Stancor is supposed to be mounted vertically but I doubt there is any real advantage. I just liked the custom fit and I did have the materials on hand. Nothing wrong with mounting it horizontally.

Alright, Well i think its time to start buying more stuff. I guess guages, chip, trans, trans cooler, flex plate, up pipes, frx, hpx, ccv, and other stuff wasn't enough for this month

unfortunately I do not know anybody of the opposite gender willing to do something like that. I have a real good 0 degree down mummy bag and built an elevated platform in the back of the bed under the topper so the gear and skis can go under and I can still sleep in the back... Pretty comfortable.

It's only money, what else did you plan on doing with it???

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easily your truck can start when everything is up to par. Good luck with it!

There may be a slight advantage from mounting the Stancor vertically with getting a more even arc wear on the contact disk internal to the relay. You would need to fashion an "L" bracket to mount the GPR in the upright position.

Stay away from the Autolites, the tip burns up and can fall into the cylinder when you try to remove them. Most use the factory Motorcraft glow plugs.

Second thought on vertical vs. horizontal mounting of Stancor.

The stock GPR is designed so the round contact moves slightly each time the relay oprartes so that the same contact surface is not used each time it operates. If the Stancor is designed the same way, and it's rouind shape would suggest so, then if mounted horizontally there may come a time when the round contact no longer moves and the same contact surfaces would be used on every start. This would certainly cause it to wear out sooner. JMHO.

Just ordered the Stancor. I had cleaned my terminals pretty well this summer and the cables look good.

Batteries:
If I take them to the auto store for testing, what is the removal order? Is there an easier way to test them. If they have failed, I see a lot of people using motor craft batteries, but what about those vs. like the big optima type batteries?

We'll have to wait until after the holidays. Just not enough free time until then unfortunetaly but be more than willing to help. Maybe I can con Bill (Billybob69) into using his barn for a GP party. He loves replacing GP's!

I don't think i can wait. I'll have to dive in on this one by myself. Looking at Thursday night at the moment for GPR and all 8 glow plugs.

I hear ya buddy. Sorry I can't help this time. Here's a write-up I did that covers a few things about doing a glow plug replacement.
