Does my Powerstroke sound normal ?

Yes, may sound like a silly question lol!! but bear in mind I've NEVER heard one other than mine.

Now it maybe just me, as I've never owned Diesel V8's before but I think there is a weird chattery/whirling type sound, just before it idles it comes in.

When driving at speed, say 50+ mph if I come off the gas, its almost silent, at lower speeds if I come off the gas it kinda pulses.

Oh man its so hard to explain!!! I did a clip of me driving it around but to be honest camera didn't pick it up, so resulted to revving at a stand still.

I'm thinking maybe fuel pump, injectors, oil pump???

Basically does it sound normal to your trained ears???

((BE WARNED Bonnet/hood slammed shut towards the end, camera survived though ))

It sounds just fine to me. From what I understand when slowing down or going down a grade fuel is not pumped into the cylinders, turbo not spinning like crazy and it is as if the engine has been shut down, going to a soft idle. It silents's the engine a lot. Nothing to worry about as far as I understand it. It is a 'Diesel' and at times it will 'sound' 'strange' in certain applications.

Yeah went youtubing but did not find anything, just page after page of burnouts and general larking about (mind you I'm guilty of a bit of larking, my Supercharged F350 Dually is also on the tube as is me beating a Subaru WRX at the drag strip in my Supercharged Harley F150)

Viper, welcome to FTE. Over the course of time a lot a different issues and concerns are posted. No one is considered stupid for any question asked. We are all here to learn and give support and give out knowledge and praise and comfort when needed. That is what makes a Brotherhood. That is what makes a Family. If you had asked something 'stupid' like, "can I put gasoline in my Diesel'? You would get 'razzed' a little and an answer of no... never.... But... you can put in cooking oil and kerosene and transmission oil and it will burn (a little rough some times) just fine...

If you have a question or concern or have an idea that will help our Fellow Brothers out.... post away. What else is Family for?

Because at that speed, the torque converter is locked. I can barely hear my engine over the road noise at that speed.

With a few hundred rpm of torque converter slip, you'll hear all sorts of things especially if your speed is hovering near the TC lockup point. Your engine sounds normal to me.

Sounds pretty normal to me, too. Except for a bit of stumble around the 7 second mark in your recording. But that could be one of any number of transitory or serviceable things. Was the engine fully warmed up? Idle tends to smooth out when the engine is up to operating temp when started at a fairly cool temp. Clean fuel filter? Adequate fuel pressure at the filter?

I have a couple of 7.3's and each one has it's own "feel", even though they are both stock and have less than 30K miles difference on the clock.

Thanks brotherles for making me feel less stupid lol!! this really is a great forum, I'm used to what I guess is called the Ricer forums, you know? the Nissan, Honda, Subaru crew, which are mainly kids with ill knowledge and misleading info 9 times out of 10.

I've had a few Skylines and Evolutions over the years but the wife still loves a turbo JDM over the heavy USA metal (hence I still have to use such forums lol!!) most american I got her was a Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder and Navigator I brought off the fail boxer Audley Harrison lol!!

Anyway thanks for the info guys and the compare clips, I feel better knowing I'm sounding normal
