where would i find the spare tire carrier brackets for my '78 f100. when i bought the truck it did not have a spare tire carrier and i thought there was none made for it until i saw a '78 the other day with a spare tire on it.
Local junkyards couldn't help me but a friend gave me the carrier off of a 72 that he acquired. He didn't have the hardware, just the bar itself. I got a piece of all-thread rod, some washers, and nuts all in stainless and made my own mounting solution, works like a charm.
If you were up here, you could have the one I am pulling from under my truck. It will be getting the Bronco Fuel tank with more capacity and I like to store my spare in the bed of the truck anyhow.

My truck actually came with the carrier itself lying in the bed, but no mounting hardware. I rigged up a piece of all-thread like you did on the one side, but found the big eye bolt for the other at the junk yard. I saw a few trucks there that had complete carriers still attached, though those bolts tend to be so rusted up that I'm not sure how much of a pain it'd be to actually get 'em off. It's also worth mentioning, you don't necessarily need to find one off a '73-'79 ... should be able to make something from other years work pretty easily. Not sure where in NC the O.P. lives, but I know the Knoxville Pull-A-Part had several. Other yards in this part of the country might too...
That's why I went with stainless. I figured the $30 I spent on hardware would be WELL worth it on the off chance that I ever had to use the stupid thing. The only "gotcha" to my solution is that it requires me to carry 2 wrenches of the appropriate size in the truck, but that's no big deal either. Got me a harbor freight special set of wrenches behind the seat and another one in the glove box. May not be the best wrenches in the world but they will get the job done when / if I need them.
